Jordan Smith is coming in to pitch the bottom of the 9th. Carolina is still winning 4-1.

Mudcats win 4-2. Smith collects the save but has a shaky relief stint -- issuing two walks and a base hit to allow Birmingham to threaten before shutting them down.

Great night for the Reds' farm teams with all three squads playing (Louisville, Carolina and Dayton) emerging victorious. Overall, strong pitching and offense combined with solid defense.

The only negative thread for the night: None of the 3B at any level managed to eke out a hit. The O'fers included Sutton (0 for 4) for Louisville, Eynmann (0 for 4) for Carolina and Pfister (0 for 5) for Dayton. If this trend continues, how long before the Reds decide they better just leave Soto occupying the Hot Corner instead of working him out behind home plate?

Great game thread tonight. Close to 100 posts with only three games being played. Hopefully Lynchburg gets there game in tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing how Mesoraco and Soto and some of those guys do.

From the DDN - Gregorius great in his Midwest League debut

DAYTON — In his first game as a Dayton Dragon, shortstop DiDi Gregorius showed a sellout crowd at Fifth Third Field — and the Lansing Lugnuts — why there’s been such a buzz about him this spring.

Included in Gregorius’s four-hit night was the RBI single to left field in the 11th inning that gave the Dragons a 6-5 win in their Midwest League opener Thursday, April 8.

Looks like Jordan Smith is being groomed as a closer. I had figured Valiquette would be in that role after a solid year last year. That's nice to see.

Also, nice to see DiDi get off to a good start. I have a feeling he's in for a real breakout this year.

4-8-10, minor-league opening night, following Bronson Arroyo's six scoreless innings (to start out) for the Reds:

AAA: Sam Lecure, five scoreless innings (to start out) for Louisville.
AA: Matt Klinker, five scoreless innings (to start out) for Carolina.
A: Josh Ravin, not as good. But still, 7 K in 3.2 IP.

    Nice.

BTW, the MiLB.com scoreboard screwed up the Carolina boxscore last night. Matt Klinker only pitched five innings. His line was: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 7 GO/5 FO, 53 pitches. Jesus Delgado pitched the 6th and 7th innings and allowed one run.

Go check out Doug's website. He's got some great video and reports from last night's Dayton game.
