    What to do with Masset?

    http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/201...o-with-masset/

Here is a little part from the post game interview with Dusty.

At least we know that Chapman will not be up anytime soon or in the bullpen when called.

I for one think Masset gets too cocky with his speed and tries to beat guys. Not fooling anyone with his fastball. He needs to be able to throw the slider for strikes and develop something else like a sinker or cutter.

Fastball down the middle=hit hard and far.

We'll see what happens. Luckily we do have some quality arms in AAA and AA.

what is dusty talking about? "he's our best choice with arthur rhodes" you answered your own question dusty, rhodes came in the 7th and didnt put a base runner on. whats wrong with using rhodes in the 8th? thats right....masset is the 8th inning guy, no questions asked.

Middle Relievers just don't go 2 innings these days. Do you want Masset in the 7th to blow up so we can have Rhodes for the 8th? Masset and Rhodes are our 2 set up men right now. He can't bring in Lincoln, he gets ripped for using Ondrusek...its gotta be Masset and Rhodes. Dusty is playing the hand he is dealt and right now its not a good one. We can't over extend our relievers who are pitching well until our starters quit throwing 100 pitches in 5 innings, so we gotta ride it out with the ones that are struggling also.

we had an off day monday...relievers should be fine. and i dont want masset in the 7th...rhodes was in the 7th, and got a 1-2-3 inning, why not leave him in for the 8th and save masset? its like dusty wants to use every bullpen arm. i know this isnt a popular opinion, but i'm not against bringing in cordero in the 8th at times. shouldnt cordero be able to throw 2 innings?

I agree with Griffey. As long as the starters are struggling to go six innings, the bullpen is not going to be effective. Masset has had some good outings, and two really bad ones. I think it is too early to pull him from 8th inning duty.

Masset=Overused. We could say the same for just about everyone in the pen. The only difference is that it was Masset's night to get bombed.
Also, The Dodger lineup isn't exactly a little league team. They're pretty darn good.

I think our best option for the eighth is in our rotation. Move Harrang to the eighth inning and bring up Wood.

    1. I agree that the bullpen is overused. The starters HAVE to get more than 5 or 6 innings in. This is killing the bullpen.
    2. I thought last night was a good time to bring in Ondrusek, we were up by 4, it was a pretty low stress situation against a good hitting team. I think it was meant to boast his confidence but I'm not sure Dusty achieved his goal.
    3. I feel we have a few good situational guys that have too big of roles in the bullpen. ie. DRH and Rhodes should be lefty specialists, instead they are called on to pitch to both lefty and righties.
    4. Our bullpen isn't that great, we need some quality starts to hide that from the rest of the league.

This may not be the worst idea I've heard today.

Re: What to do with Masset?

I don't blame the starters for the bullpen's woes - most teams get a lot of five and six inning starts these days.

This pen lacks quality depth from the right side.

One possible solution is to use Owings more often in the late innings. He's looked pretty good so far.

Another possible solution is to bring up Carlos Fisher who started strong at AAA. He'd probably replace Ondrusek.

Another possible solution is a trade for an innings eating reliever.

Masset needs to be checked out to make sure he is healthy. Then, perhaps, he should work some lower stress innings for awhile with Rhodes pitching more often in the 8th.

There are a bunch of things they can do to try and improve the pen.

Owings may very well pitch himself into the a bigger relief role if he keeps throwing well, similar to how Masset did last year.

Who would have thought we would be missing ol stormy weathers so much.

Maybe if Dusty knew how to manage a pitching staff this wouldn't be an issue. Since he can't and it appears our new pitching coach isn't the boy wonder people thought, we could be in trouble. You want to solve Masset's problem, real simple...

    Fire Dusty Baker
Fire the pitching coach and bring back Poole.
