Here's a site designed about a decade ago with the help of one of my friends at Cal-Berkeley. It's more accurate than the other magic number sites I've seen because it writes the MLB schedule into the formula. The numbers represent the number necessary to clinch a "tie" and force a one-game playoff (like in 1999). So I always add 1 to the magic number.

At start of play on the morning of August 29, the Reds' magic number for reaching the playoffs is only 29.
Stick to your guns.
