Although he didn't always put up the greatest numbers, it was hard not to like this guy. He was one of my favorite players while he was here. The way he would lay out for any ball regardless of the damage he inflicted on his own body was uncanny. He was very unique in that regard and I loved watching him play.

He was one of my favorites too. I remember the one time he dove on the warning track and ripped his jersey almost off lol

I've come to the conclusion that Ryan Freel is a yucky blend of bad defense, poor plate discipline, and false hustle, all rolled into a shell of injury-waiting-to-happen.
Freels careers OBP was .354

We missed his ability at the top of the order to get on and wreak havoc (literally, and sometimes against the REDS).
Bad defense? He made some of the most spectacular diving catches I have ever seen from an outfielder. I always thought if he played a single position for an entire year he would have won a gold glove.
Not sure what you mean by false hustle. I remember a few times where he stretched a single into a double because the outfielder was slow to get the ball back into play.
Yes, he was quite injury prone, but that's what happens when you dive head first into walls.
He played hard, but he didn't play very smart, IMHO.
Nope he didn't always smart. He did play hard though and often times, very well.
Had a good arm and range in the outfield, and got on base a lot.
Freel played with off-the-chart ferocity. He was about as fast a white guy as there is. That speed was his only real weapon. He could take a bad path to a fly ball, and end up making a spectacular "looking" catch only because that speed allowed him to catch back up to the ball. When he busted up his knee, he came back the next year a step slower. When he injured his wheels again, his only talent was gone. He was fun to watch though, eh?
One of my favorite Reds of all time. Gotta love seeing guys who truly care about the game. In the face of a lot of dismal Reds teams was a guy who truly busted his ass and gave it his all.
He squeezed out every last ounce of talent he had.
