Penny on the 15-Day DL; Lohse also hurt...

    http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/1....mlb;headlines

Cardinals pitcher Brad Penny was put on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strain his upper back, although the team believes it's a minor injury. St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak said Penny received an injection and could pitch again in as soon as 10 days, meaning he'd miss one turn in the rotation.

Kyle Lohse was worried he might be joining Penny on the DL after a recurrence of a forearm injury that haunted him last season. Lohse said it felt like the forearm was cramping Saturday.

Lohse gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings and is 1-4 with a 5.89 ERA.

"I'm trying to battle through it out there and it wasn't working out very well," Lohse said. "It's pretty apparent when you go out there and throw the ball like I was today that you're not helping the team.

They still have Carpenter, Wainwright and young sensation Garcia. Lohse and Penny were pitching pretty well for the most part, but they're the weaker link to that rotation.

Hopefully the Reds can open up a 3-4 game lead during this stretch.

As posted in another thread, that's two of them down now with Lohse being down even longer.

Just win today (Thursday). That's all that matters.

Cards are reeling right now.The Reds better take full advantage and strike while the iron is hot.

Maybe we could trade Masset to them and they could make him a starter?

    From Rotoworld w/ Rotoworld comments:

A team source told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss that a reasonable timetable for Brad Penny's return from his lat strain is 4-6 weeks.

Neither Penny nor the team has set an official timetable for the right-hander's return, so this is the closest we've come to having a sense of when Penny might rejoin the Cardinals' rotation. The same source said that Penny might be able to throw off a mound this week. Penny was off to a strong start for St. Louis, with a 3-4 record, a 3.23 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in nine starts. Adam Ottavino and P.J. Walters will remain in the rotation for the time being with Penny and Kyle Lohse out for the foreseeable future.

PJ Walters and Adam Ottavino have now made three starts between them. Cards are 2-1 in those games as their bats have wakened up.

Meanwhile, amid all the hoopla of two perfect games and another that should have been, Jason Motte has retired the last 31 batters he's faced. That's 10 1/3 perfect innings, just ten outs short of the record for relievers held by Bobby Jenks of the ChiSox.

Just don't bring him in to face Gomes any time soon. That's a pretty darn impressive streak. The Reds pen can't go an inning without walking anyone, let alone 31 straight batters.

I doubt Motte's streak will stay alive until August 9. That's the next time the Cards and Reds will play.
