Re: 2010 Cincinnati REDS Golf Thread

Another sub-par hole for the 2010 REDS.

They're putting for an EAGLE (7-2) at #14 on Tuesday versus San Francisco. Lose and they still get a BIRDIE (6-3). But, win and they get their first EAGLE or better since Hole #5 and move to 13-UNDER.

Re: 2010 Cincinnati REDS Golf Thread

    Hole #14: Scottsdale

The REDS attacked this hole in the Desert of Arizona with a flurry (sweeping the D-Backs) with two sensational shots that got them onto the green in 2 of this par-5 hole. With just a 15-foot putt to make Eagle, the REDS left it short (back-to-back blowouts by the Giants), tapping in for another BIRDIE (6-3). What is in reality a great score, the team is left the hole with their heads down as they know what could have been.

On to the next hole, #15. With only four holes to go, the REDS control their own destiny. They'd have to choke at this point to not finish this Round with a trip to the playoffs. Playing the last 4 holes at 3-Under though (23-13 and 95 wins for the season), would probably ensure them of their first playoff appearance since 1995.

    After 14 Holes: (12-UNDER):

    1. BIRDIE (5-4)
    2. DOUBLE-BOGEY (2-7)
    3. EAGLE (6-3)
    4. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    5. EAGLE (6-3)
    6. BIRDIE (5-4)
    7. BIRDIE (5-4)
    8. BOGEY (3-6)
    9. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    10. BOGEY (3-6)
    11. BIRDIE (6-3)
    12. PAR (5-4)
    13. BIRDIE (6-3)
    14. BIRDIE (6-3)

Re: 2010 Cincinnati REDS Golf Thread

With those two blowouts now behind us, we move onto the next hole.

Everything starts fresh on Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco.

Bogey-free the rest of the way and we're in.

No better way to get off to a good start on the 15th hole than to win it's first game (12-11 over the Giants). (4-4 over the next 8 and they PAR; 5-3 over the next 8 and they get a BIRDIE). I'm hoping for the BIRDIE.

    Hole #15: Cobbs Creek

With only four holes to play and the Division seemingly sewed up, the 2010 Cincinnati REDS could have played the 15th Hole more casually, and just tried to go for PAR. Instead, they shifted into another gear and buried in the sand the St. Louis Cardinals by delivering super shot after super shot on their way to their first EAGLE (7-2) since May 16-24th. (Though they had a DOUBLE-EAGLE June 23-July 2) Their first shot was long and down the middle [Wins over San Francisco (12-11) and Chicago (7-1)], while their 2nd shot was onto the Green [Wins over Chicago (7-5) and Milwaukee (5-4 and 8-4)] setting up a DOUBLE-EAGLE putt. They missed the DOUBLE-EAGLE putt from 50-feet, but nailed the 4-foot comeback (Victory over St. Louis 6-1). All year long, they've been playing against themselves. The Cardinals have never been a competitor in this race. The consistency all year long by the REDS have proven at each hole that the REDS were never ever going to look back at a bad shot, and go forward with greater effort whenever they faced a difficult situation.

At 14-UNDER par with 3 holes to play, it's not a matter of IF the 2010 REDS will make the playoffs, but WHAT their final score will be. 16-UNDER par (96-66, .593) this year would give them their greatest 162-game record since the 1976 World Championships, a team many consider to be the Greatest Baseball Team ever. This may yet go down as one of the greatest REDS' teams ever as they've now bested par for the 11th time in 15 holes. They're certainly one of the most over-achieving REDS' teams of all time.

    After 15 Holes: (14-UNDER):

    1. BIRDIE (5-4)
    2. DOUBLE-BOGEY (2-7)
    3. EAGLE (6-3)
    4. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    5. EAGLE (6-3)
    6. BIRDIE (5-4)
    7. BIRDIE (5-4)
    8. BOGEY (3-6)
    9. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    10. BOGEY (3-6)
    11. BIRDIE (6-3)
    12. PAR (5-4)
    13. BIRDIE (6-3)
    14. BIRDIE (6-3)
    15. EAGLE (7-2)

Kudos for an awesome idea and awesome thread. Great concept and even better pics. As long as the Reds don't have a Jean Van de Velde type finish, we should cruise the rest of the way.

    Hole #16: The Windmill

The REDS kept slamming it into that darn Windmill on their way to a DOUBLE-BOGEY (3-6) getting swept by the Rockies in a 4-game series. That's OK though, as the Cardinals were busy banging away at the Clownface. They were determined to remain "behind" the REDS the rest of the year.

With two holes to play the REDS are no longer concerned about the Cardinals. It's all home-field advantage in the playoffs from here. On to #17 and back to real golf after playing around that last hole.

    After 16 Holes: (12-UNDER):

    1. BIRDIE (5-4)
    2. DOUBLE-BOGEY (2-7)
    3. EAGLE (6-3)
    4. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    5. EAGLE (6-3)
    6. BIRDIE (5-4)
    7. BIRDIE (5-4)
    8. BOGEY (3-6)
    9. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    10. BOGEY (3-6)
    11. BIRDIE (6-3)
    12. PAR (5-4)
    13. BIRDIE (6-3)
    14. BIRDIE (6-3)
    15. EAGLE (7-2)
    16. DOUBLE-BOGEY (3-6)

    Hole #17: Guilin Merry Land

With such a huge lead going into the last three holes, the REDS took their foot off the pedal and played conservative golf. While the 16th Hole was terrible because of their "too conservative" play, the 17th Hole was good enough as they carded a BOGEY (4-5) losing the last 2 of 3 to Arizona and 2 of 3 to Houston before righting the ship and taking 2 of 3 from Milwaukee. They've just been enjoying the view from the top the last two holes. It's been a while since they've been here, so you can't really blame them. They've earned it.

    After 17 Holes: (11-UNDER):

    1. BIRDIE (5-4)
    2. DOUBLE-BOGEY (2-7)
    3. EAGLE (6-3)
    4. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    5. EAGLE (6-3)
    6. BIRDIE (5-4)
    7. BIRDIE (5-4)
    8. BOGEY (3-6)
    9. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    10. BOGEY (3-6)
    11. BIRDIE (6-3)
    12. PAR (5-4)
    13. BIRDIE (6-3)
    14. BIRDIE (6-3)
    15. EAGLE (7-2)
    16. DOUBLE-BOGEY (3-6)
    17. BOGEY (4-5)

I really enjoy reading your golf thread Kingspoint. It gives you a good perspective of the ups and downs of a 162 game season. Plus it helps me from freaking out about dropping 2 of 3 to bad teams in June.

Re: 2010 Cincinnati REDS Golf Thread

(The last 6 home games should all be about the fans showing their appreciation to the REDS.)

These last 6 home games are fun games to go to. No pressure. Just fun. Sitting at the top enjoying some baseball games before it gets really intense 11 days from now.

Okay, I've played there. Not there-there, but I've played at Princeville.

I actually think that's the Makai Course at Princeville, while I played the Prince Course at Princeville three weeks ago.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Kauai, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play. It was fantastic, and not near as difficult as I expected.

How gorgeous. What a nice time to be there.

I watched the sun rise on the top of Diamond Head in the morning, but I didn't play any courses while there.

**I snookered a side-trip up to Fenway on my honeymoon.

    Hole #18: Deer Track

The 2010 Cincinnati REDS finish on their home course of Deer Track with a nice final putt for a PAR (5-4). They did what they had to do the last 3 holes to ensure a complete season and advance to the TPC for 2010. At 11-under par (80 wins was par), the REDS finished with an identical record to their 1990 World Championship season where they swept the A's in 4 dominating World Series games. At 11-under, the 91 Wins were a sneak-peek to what we can come to expect at these new-look REDS. 90 Wins will be the norm for quite a few years as the franchise is loaded with young talent in pitching, hitting and defense.

    On to the Post-Season!

    After 18 Holes: (11-UNDER):

    1. BIRDIE (5-4)
    2. DOUBLE-BOGEY (2-7)
    3. EAGLE (6-3)
    4. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    5. EAGLE (6-3)
    6. BIRDIE (5-4)
    7. BIRDIE (5-4)
    8. BOGEY (3-6)
    9. DOUBLE-EAGLE (7-2)
    10. BOGEY (3-6)
    11. BIRDIE (6-3)
    12. PAR (5-4)
    13. BIRDIE (6-3)
    14. BIRDIE (6-3)
    15. EAGLE (7-2)
    16. DOUBLE-BOGEY (3-6)
    17. BOGEY (4-5)
    18. PAR (5-4)
