    Re: Griffey to announce retirement

Here's another excellent story on Griffey.

Katrina Marino had one wish Saturday. “I just hope Kenny is watching,” she said.

Kenny, Katrina's late husband, was a New York City firefighter who perished in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. He was also a huge baseball fan, and Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. was his favorite player
The Marinos and Griffey will be linked forever. Before one of the first games after the tragedy, Katrina e-mailed Reds publicity man Rob Butcher with this message:

“My husband, Kenny Marino, a Rescue 1 firefighter, is missing. Ken Griffey Jr. was his favorite player. . . . If Ken Griffey Jr. could hit an extra home run for Kenny, I know he will be looking down with a big smile.”

Griffey delivered, hitting a home run in the Reds' 8-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that night.

I think a nice tribute to Jr. would be if MLB added him to the AL All Star team as an honorary non-playing member. He could come out in uniform and do all the All Star stuff and be introduced with the rest of the AL All Stars.

My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

One of my favorite Junior stories from his time in Cincinnati that shows the fun he had in everything the time he paid his bet with Fogg in pennies.

I would like to seen Stark break down the Cincy years to separate his late prime from his clear decline, but yeah, good stuff.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    From Brian Giesenschlag:

Just talked to Griffey's agent B Goldberg. Says Jr had talked about retiring for a few weeks. Look for Jr at Reds/Mariners gm in two weeks.

I knew this day was coming (or yesterday) but still its hard to believe. Even in the last few years one still got to see him at the plate but now he won't be taking the field again. Hopefully in 5 years time they will show his highlights again. He will be missed.

I don't care that much about the numbers, what if he'd have been healthy, or numerical comparisons to other great players. What matters to my baseball eyes is the way Griffey played; that beautiful swing, breaking on a batted ball and tracking it better than anyone I ever saw play, and of course the leaping catches and the great throws. He seemed to be the perfect baseball player.

I for one, will miss you Junior. Like my life, you had your ups and downs but I always liked you as a player and you were my favorite during the period when I was 10,11, and 12 (1992-1994) and was falling in love with this game. Thank you.

    Quick Jr. trivia question:

Name the only major league team that Ken Griffey Jr. has not homered against?

That would just about have to be the only team. I can't think of anyone else. Maybe Tampa Bay?
