You've got to feel bad for Joyce on a human level. Like a car accident where the driver just didn't see the person, it can leave a bigger emotional scar on the driver the person who got hit.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I'm not sad for him at all. In that situation every ump knows to error big time on the side of the perfect game. Have you seen the call on the last pitch of Don Larson's perfect game? It wasn't even close but called a strike because you don't lose a perfect game on a close call. It always goes to the defense.

The fact that Joyce did not know that, or understand that is his own fault.

Let the manager challenge the call (once per game) and have an official in the booth view the replay(s), make the call, and inform the crew chief via radio. It would apply to only to boundary calls, force plays, and tags.

Is it perfect? No. But it would be a quick and painless way to correct gross mistakes with virtually no impact on the pace and length of the game.

If you want to speed up the pace of the game, call the real strikezone and get more swings, more balls in play, more strikes and not so many boring walks and deep counts.
Any break in the action is just another chance to sell stuff = longer games.

I'm all for whatever technology speeds up the game, but challenges (even just one a game) ain't it.

And I'm more than fine replacing home plate umps with tech. You're preaching to the choir.

It's a really easy call to make in slo-mo after repeated viewing. Making it at full speed in the heat of the moment? Not so much.

Umpires have a ridiculously difficult job that constantly challenges the limit of human perception. It's a shame MLB execs limit their ability to get help making the right call.

Just saw Galarraga interviewed on MLB Network- I am now a big fan of the man. He showed incredible charity; said that Joyce was totally apologetic, and looked like he felt worse than Galarraga did.

Galarraga said that he gave Joyce a hug.

I'm glad we agree on the latter point. But you can't convince me that getting it done quick is a higher priority than getting it done right. Especially when the time cost is tiny and outcome cost potentially very high.

What I can't understand is if Joyce - or any ump - knows they blew the call right away, why don't they just reverse themselves.

Only this was more like a guy running a red light and killing someone. This was all Joyces fault.

I'd like to know how much money Joyce just stole out of Galarraga's pocket.

No kidding. He gets zero sympathy from me, and I'm an umpire myself.

Well, that's the analogy I wanted to use. It was all the driver's fault in my case too, but it was an honest one. It's not like Joyce was drunk. I chose not to b/c I figured people would freak out that I'd compare a baseball play to a person's death...

What a great moment in Comerica:Jim Joyce apologizes to Galarraga, Galarraga accepts, they hug. Class by Joyce, incredible class by the kid.

The play at first, no matter how close, is one of the easiest to make You are right there, and it's all in front of you. That play gets called rught. 99.99% of the time.
