    White Sox open for business

So says Buster Olney with sources (via MLBTR)...

Walt's made deals with Williams before and the entry lists a handful of relievers.

Putz seems to make the most sense for the Reds.

Minor pet peeve... but so says Buster Olney.

MLBTR just repeats the reports. It's a great site to visit because it pools all the reports together, but they should get very little credit for reports.

Agreed. His numbers look real good so far, and he's only making 3 million.

I too like Putz, and he would look good at the back of the pen, but I like another guy (Tony Pena) so hear me out.....

IP W-L SV ERA Ks BB
    32.0 1-1 0 3.94 23 16

He's 28 had better success in the NL and has worked under Price before in Arizona. He would probably cost us( Maloney, LeCure)type guys but I think he fills a significant role in the 6-7 inning range for us. Thus allowing Rhodes, Masset to be used in more effective spots and not so often! I think Walt is waiting on guys like Burton and Volquez to rehab but those guys should be coddled due to their recent injuries.

    New BP would be
Cordero, Rhodes, Masset, Pena, Herrera, Owings, Del Rosario.

Nothing is going to change with this bullpen unless someone gets hurt. In other words, if Dusty were managing the Brewers, Trevor Hoffman would still be the closer.

I don't think that is true. Dusty gets a bad rap for in game management, but he's been very deft at managing the players. I have no doubt he'd have handled Hoffman and moved him to another spot in the pen. Remember, Jr. moved to RF after Dusty came on board.

    Oops. nope that was Narron.

    so, nevermind.

Hard not to be intrigued by any of their top 3 relievers Thorton, Putz & Santos. I like all three. I'm sure Santos would be the cheapest of the three but also the least experienced IIRC. I've been saying for a while that this is the team we should be looking at as a trade partner (along with the Pirates & Astros). Hopefully Walt has his ears open.
    2014 predictions:
99-63 WS champs (Cards take 2nd WC, Mil 3rd, Pit 4th, Chi 5th)
Bruce/Votto neck and neck MVP race (neither takes it)
    Bailey CYA winner
    Hamilton ROY & GG

Thornton would be awesome, but they aren't likely to trade him. It's believed if they can unload Jenks, they will make Thornton their closer.

As BTP said, Thornton isn't going anywhere.

The only guy I want from the Sox is Thorton (who as stated, they aren't likely to deal). Putz, I guess would work, but I wouldn't give up a lot for him.

The more talk of Volquez in the pen the more I worry if he starts out effective in the pen he will get abused more there then the rotation would do to him.

Re: White Sox open for business

i looked at Thornton's stats. nice work the last few years. however, i doubt he is "untouchable". why? he is 33 years old. teams looking to rebuild a little don't usually get too attached to guys over 30.

the Reds could put together a pretty decent package to land a good late inning reliever. would you trade Heisey, Maloney & Del Rosario for Thornton? would the Sox make that deal?
