Are we going to have a Third Day thread? The Reds took Cal State Northridge first baseman Dominic D'Anna. Draft being held up to clear up some technical difficulties on the audio.

D'Anna had really good numbers in 2009, can't find this year's for some reason. It might be a Danny Dorn-style pick- Dorn had had great numbers, but fell far down in the draft due to an injury-plagued final season. Dorn was out of Cal-Fullerton, D'Anna is from Cal-State Northridge.

Pretty good filler pick - above average first baseman, numbers not remarkable, but solid, had a fielding % of .990 (4th in the Big West, a good league). Big guy with power, lefty bat, seems similar to some guys we have in A-ball.

Wasn't injured - played all the games. Some of the numbers are in this profile:

He's from Cal-State Northridge, not Fullerton.

Good, so maybe D'Anna can jump right in at Billings and do what Dorn did in 2006. Impressive that the bio has already been updated within 10 minutes of D'Anna's selection.

Reds take another lefty-swinging college 1B, Jaren Matthews from Rutgers, in round 32.

The Red Sox had taken him in the 17th round in 2007.

Reds take another first baseman, Jaren Matthews from Rutgers. Following that, the Chisox took Jarrett Casey from NKU.

    Sorry, I'll correct on mine.

The Dodgers just took Andre Ethier's kid brother in round 32. He's also an outfielder.

Which reminds me: I thought it was really odd that the Nats didn't take Bryce Harper's brother. Instead, he falls all the way to the 27th round when the Cubs took him. It wasn't like the guy was chopped liver, either- he's a left-handed pitcher who's hit 92 on the gun. Baseball Prospectus had him as a 7-10 round talent.

Re: The Official Second Day Draft Thread - 2010

Not sure if this has been posted already, but the discussion of the Lohman pick led me to do a little bit of research on him, and I found this blurb on Baseball America:

Following a Dirtbags shortstop lineage that has included Bobby Crosby, Troy Tulowitzki, Evan Longoria and Danny Espinosa, Lohman is an intriguing talent if not quite in that league. Blessed with above-average speed, Lohman, 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, is an excellent athlete who could easily transition to less demanding defensive positions. His arm grades out to solid-average. He has worked hard to improve his defense and has a chance to stay at shortstop, though second base is his more likely home. At bat, Lohman has altered his approach in 2010 to use the whole field and focus on hitting line drives. His earlier attempts to be a lift and pull power hitter were ill-suited to his natural inclinations. The changes had paid off and Lohman was batting .415 at the end of the regular season, a difficult feat considering that Blair Field is possibly the best pitcher's park in college baseball. He blends an average arm and glove with above-average speed, and his advancement at bat should boost his draft stock in a year that's thin in college position players, particularly on the infield.
Reading this made me doubt the pick a little less.

Ex-Giants 2B Robby Thompson's kid just went to the Indians in round 33. Logan is also a 2B.

The White Sox took RHP Jamaal Hollis out of Miami-Ohio with the very next pick.

Spelling shows as Garner on MLB.
