Talking to a scout friend of mine right now.... he has a guy he scouted still undrafted as a 6'4" lefty who throws 90 who said he would sign. How is a guy like this on the board still but the Reds took a guy in the 45th round with 17 career at bats as a 23 year old in college?

He sounds like a pretty decent selection, commit of U of Texas. Might be an impossible sign. Was ranked 44th in the state of Texas by BA. Brodie Greene (selected much, much, much earlier by Cincy) was ranked 39th.

    Found this as well.

Dexter Kjerstad OF RHP 6-0 180 R R Randall High School Amarillo TX-1st Team All District 3-4A, Member of the 2009 Texas Rangers Area Code Team, hitting .514 with 46 runs, 51 RBIs and just 10 strikeouts in 111 at-bats. He also belted eight home runs, five of which came in the playoffs, where he hit .640 and scored 13 runs. Dex Kjerstad (2010) out of Canyon Randall (Amarillo, Texas) had a good day as well. He showed well offensively and defensively and posted 60-yard time of 6.66, one of the fastest times at the tryout. -Committed to the University of Texas

Really? Reading that made me doubt the pick a little more.

If the guy is not a stud with the stick, I'd prefer they draft someone who could actually stick at the position. Maybe he can, but that scouting report seems to imply he won't. I'm picturing a lesser-hitting Chris Valaika.

Yeah, Dexter Kjerstad is a Texas commit. I'm just guessing here, but I think he may have a shot at starting as a Freshman if he comes to Texas.

I've heard that he is a pretty talented hitter.

Kjerstad is the third Amarillo-area player selected in the MLB draft, joining Hereford pitcher Parker Bridwell (ninth round by the Baltimore Orioles) and Palo Duro/Frank Phillips College pitcher Corey Goudeau (18th round by the Florida Marlins).

Wishing for James Paxton, AJ Cole, or Austin Wilson with the second round pick, third round pick, and fourth round pick of the 2010 draft. Three years later, if they were to redraft, all three of these guys would likely go in the top 10 overall. Instead we pass on them for Ryan LaMarre, Devin Lohman, and Brodie Greene.

If only the Reds would listen to me more...
