Unless we're talking specifically about passing up a guy who was unanimously a 1st round talent who slipped for financial reasons, it's more or less a crap-shoot.

Hard to complain about getting up the middle talent.
Yeah, while there are always exceptions you are really going to see the impact guys go early. Maybe that's the philosophy...take the "safer" guys in the high risk rounds. Maybe they don't hit the ceiling, but maybe they don't hit the floor either.

I don't know these players well enough to comment. Just reading BA's reports, Green could be a utility player relatively soon. The outfielder from Michigan was rated 32 by BA and could do well in the minors, could play a fourth outfielder role relatively soon.

Reds don't want to spend high picks on guys who are six years away. They are focused on the relative near term IMO.

Text I got from a friend who played with LaMarre at Michigan:

    "Stud!

He's a good friend of mine, he'll work his (butt) off and be up there in a couple years I guarantee it."

Take that for whatever its worth.

That has also been Chris Buckley's MO throughout his career, including when he was with the Blue Jays. His other trademark is taking college relievers with starter-type pitch repertoires (and thus less arm strain) and attempting to convert them to starters.

There you have it...couple of year equals 2012.

I doubt anyone knows. I doubt many Card fans felt confident that Pujols would make the show when he was draft, nor Oswalt, Piazza, etc.... if its hard to judge the first couple of rounds of a draft until 3 years later, its impossible to stake a claim as to which mid to late round pick (or whatever you want to classify as rounds 3 and beyond) are going to be true diamonds in the rough.

Man, that kid with the first name Jablonski probably learned how to defend himself pretty well in the schoolyard.

If there is one thing I do know its that I trust Buckley.

I'll never forget the DDN story about Michael Griffin when he was with the Dragons that posited that the guy could be the next Pujols because they were drafted in the same round (14th? 12th? somewhere around there). Nothing against Mr. Griffin or anything.
