Jaren Matthews from my HS. Nice.
At least the third person from my HS in the last 15 or so drafts that Cincy has taken that I am aware of.

The Pirates take a shortstop named Kelson Brown out of local (to me, that is) Division III baseball power Linfield College.

Pretty sure some players are getting drafted out of NBC page Kenneth's alma mater, Tennessee Mountain Bible College.
The Reds take Canadian HS SS Brandon Dailey in round 34.
Maybe Jaren should have signed out of HS
http://baseballbeginnings.com/2010/0...en-mathews-qa/Baseball Beginnings: What was your thinking after you were drafted out of high school?
Mathews: They gave me a very good offer for the 17th round. They offered $250,000. School was important for me and my family, to pursue a degree at least for three years, and if I went pro after three years, I could cut out a chunk of it. I didn’t want to be 24 about to start college for the first time if things didn’t work out in baseball. The thought process was go to college and get better. I wanted to be sure I was ready for pro ball when I went around.
Baseball Beginnings: $250,000 is good money for that round.
Mathews: It was third-round money that year.
Apparently he's committed to play at Ohio University, from OU's website:
5’9 / 165 pounds ~ Bats: R Throws: R
Brantford, Ontario, Canada ~ Pauline Johnson Collegiate
Daily, a shortstop from Brantford, Ont., attends Pauline Johnson Collegiate where he also plays hockey, volleyball, and runs track. The right-handed batter plays shortstop for the Intercounty Terriers summer league team, which is coached by Dan Thompson. Dailey was the Terriers’ Team MVP in 2007 as well as the Brantford Red Sox MVP in 2007. Dailey currently plays for the Canadian Junior National Team and will play for them again in 2010. He has a 4.0 GPA and plans to major in Math or Science while attending Ohio.
BTW, they have his name misspelled in the info piece. It is Dailey.

St. Louis just took Chris Valaika's younger brother Matt. If I'm not mistaken, the Reds picked him last year in the 20th round and he didn't sign.

He's a senior, so he's pretty much stuck if he wants to play pro ball.
And speaking of Ohio University, they have a third player selected this year- the Angels take 1B Jerod Yakubik.
I can't see too many of the Bobcat pitchers going this year- despite a bunch of hitting talent, the club finished 20-35 and had a team ERA over 6.

In round 35 the Orioles took a guy whose position was listed as "utility". Man, way to let 'em down easy.
Round 35: RHP Philip Wilson out of the University of Virginia. 6'2".
Florida takes a guy out of another local institution, Mt. Hood Community College. I didn't know they even had a baseball program.
St. Louis takes former MLB pitcher Andy Benes' son Andrew in round 35. Andy's brother Alan is apparently a Cardinal scout.
The Mets took a kid out of Phil Valiquette's alma mater, Edouard Montpetit HS in Quebec. The name is incredibly long and complicated and there's no cutting and pasting from the MLB draft tracker.
