    Lucas O'Rear

With their 13th round pick, the Reds selected RHP Lucas O'Rear out of the University of Northern Iowa.

He was a two sport athlete at UNI (baseball and Basketball) until UNI cut their baseball program following the 2009 season.

He decided to put off his baseball career and play basketball for at least one more year, knowing that UNI had potential to be very good at basketball. It worked out for them, and UNI made a sweet sixteen appearance by knocking off Kansas.

He is a 6'7 240 pound righthander who played HS ball in Illinois.

I really liked watching the kid in the ncaa tournament but I had no idea that he was a baseball player. Mark this down as my favorite pick

O’Rear showed some adaptability this summer, while pitching for the Cincinnati Reds organization after being picked in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

He was a rookie league prospect in July and August, then rejoined the Panthers when classes began.

“I flipped a switch there for a second, got going with baseball,” O’Rear said. “Toward the end, I was kind of like, ‘I’m ready to go back and play a little more basketball.’ ”

O’Rear is scheduled to resume his baseball career one week after Northern Iowa’s season ends.

#Northern_Iowa F Lucas O'Rear out for yr with fractured ankle. Should be out until May as he'll likely pursue career as pitcher with #Reds

#O'Rear is a RH reliever who throws in low 90s. wld guess he'd pitch instructional league 1st given time away/injury
