Re: Seems like Billings roster has been updated

    From the Billings Gazette:

** The Billings Mustangs released their roster on Saturday (the one on the Mustangs' web site is a little different than the one they faxed me; William Stramp isn't on the faxed roster, while catcher Tucker Barnhart is), and a couple things stand out:

    1) How young this team is. Nine players are still in their teens, though pitcher Tyler Cline will turn 20 on Thursday. Three others are 20 years old. Ten players were born in 1990 or later; 1990 is the last time the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series.

    2) How "experienced" this team is. Twenty of the 29 players already have a year of professional baseball under their belts, meaning they've played at either the Gulf Coast League, the Dominican Summer League, or with the Mustangs. Twenty is quite a few, compared to past years.

I don't believe Stramp is in the organization anymore. Just a left over name from last years roster.

Re: Seems like Billings roster has been updated

    From the Billings Gazette:

Daniel Tuttle, a fifth-round selection from the 2009 draft, drew tonight’s starting assignment. Last year in the Gulf Coast League, Tuttle was 1-2 with a 1.67 ERA in 32 1/3 innings. The right-hander said he’s excited to get the season going.
Later, though, the Mustangs skipper did look into the future. He said he sees Major League potential in players like infielders Hamilton, Lohman and Jefry Sierra, outfielders Juan Duran and Yorman Rodriguez, and catcher Tucker Barnhart.

“I think we’ve got a few big leaguers on this team, quite honestly,” he said. “This is a good group here. I think as far as the Reds’ future, a lot of it’s going to come from this group right here.”

Sierra is a big surprise to me. Though he did hit .336 in the GCL last year.

The Billings squad has some serious speed.

That's quite a lot of players to make the big leagues at some point. We've rarely had that many Mustangs make it all the way through. Just perusing their rosters over the years, we had six from our first season out there (1978) make the ML's. Generally it's only 1 to 3, with some occasional exceptions. And then some of those who make it, really are just the proverbial cup of coffee and with another club. But we've had some decent players come through. It really is an eye opener to see how much winnowing takes place before players come to Cincinnati.

And they did refer to Barnhart as a catcher.

It is the Latin American players who are high end talents that make that group so big. Siera, Duran and Yorman are part of that. I like the slow handed approach to develop these kids. Take them level by level until they reach A+. Then move them at their own personal developmental rate.

I do believe Hamilton seems rushed to Billings. But they have seen him all Spring so I'm sure they wouldn't put him there if they didn't think he had a decent shot at success. Silva was bit of a surprise. I would have taken him over Duran being promoted. But it is soooo nice to have even a discussion about all the talent in Rookie Ball that us as fan feel like should be there that isn't.

Speaking of Billings, I see where they were hit by a pretty decent-sized twister this weekend. Anyone know if the stadium sustained any damage?

Putting a second round selection in Billings in his second professional season is far from rushing, especially for a position player.

Hamilton will be playing in Dayton next year, therefore starting him anywhere other than Billings would be doing him a disservice.

I'm very curious to see who will get more reps at SS between him and Lohman.

Tonight's game is in question as the field was flooded last night according to the Billings Gazette.

It is a good situation to have and I hope the predictions prove to be true. We've had a number of years out there where a good handful of players became ML players, some of them productive players.

No damage to the ballfield just lots of rain, lots and lots of water standing in the outfield as of late last night... but i was told the game would be played as scheduled. If it doesn't rain any more today. Can't wait to see how Tuttle pitches tonight and how Hamilton, Duran, Rodriguez handle themselves. Should be fun!

Agreed. I'm looking forward to following this team. I'm especially excited about following the progress of Yorman, Duran, and Hamilton. I just wish Juan Silva was on that team to give them an outfield of Juan Silva/Yorman Rodriguez/Juan Duran.
On the pitching side of things, Daniel Corcino, Tyler Cline, Daniel Tuttle, and Starlin Gerson interest me the most. Tanner Robles is a sleeper too. I really like Corcino's arm.

If interested, Barnhart does have a few updates here and there on his Twitter page:
