Six Mudcats named to All-Star team

ZEBULON - Despite a last-place finish in the first half of the season, the Carolina Mudcats placed six players on the Northern Division All-Star team, the second most of any team in the division.

Infielders Jake Kahaulelio and Mike Costanzo, outfielders Sean Henry and Dave Sappelt, and pitchers Matt Klinker and Tom Cochran were named to the squad late yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

They are a bad team, but they certainly have some good players.

All I have to go on, is reading stats, and what posters who actually watch the team have to say. Mesoraco started off slow after being promoted, but has steadily improved. I've also noticed the same for Coddington at Lynchburg after being promoted from Dayton. This year the 1st round was for a catcher. Seems like a good position to deal prospects from in the future for other needs, eh?

It is surprising to see so many all stars from a last place team. Which begs the question, What is going on in the Reds farm system? Louisville has spent most of the year in last place. This, in spite of the fact they are supposed to have a great pitching staff. Vailaika, despite the fact of hitting .300 bats near the bottom of the line-up while Burke and Cozart are on 1,2. Is Sweet trying to lose.

Carolina, same thing. They have a pretty good staff. three starters with ERA's under 3, but last place in where to look if you want to find them.

I have to also wonder about some of the comments made about the prospects.

Sappelt has never had a season batting under .270, but he will never see the majors because he can't hit right. Yet Alonso, who has never batted over .270 is some great find destined for Cooperstown. Well, he better get started soon because times a wasting. Sean Henry is batting .300 also, but of course is a bum. Success is a bad word in the Reds farm system. Having it is a detriment.

Satterwhite is a bum. But, of course he is batting well. He will never be in the mahors.

Meanwhile, in the American Association (Independent League) Josh Horn, SS is batting .350. Only his third consecutive season above .300. Never been drafted, no one seems interested. Gotta wonder why. I know why the reds aren't interested. The guy may know what he is doing.

The Carolina thing might point to how that team has been sabotaged by its bullpen. In spite of the presence of a few very good relievers in the system--starting with Joseph, obviously--Cincinnati farm teams have chronically blown leads this year. If you follow the games in progress, you've probably come to expect that a 1- or 2- or even 3-run lead in the late innings is simply not going to hold up in most cases, and on most of the clubs.
