    The Rolen trade almost wasn't

    Per J.P. Ricciardi:

Actually, it was almost too close to the deadline. As we were trying to send all the details to the commissioner's office, the fax machine stopped working. Here I am, kicking the fax machine, and screaming at Rolen's agent, saying, "Send the agreement again!" (Rolen had to sign off on the deal because of his no-trade clause.) It took us about five tries to finally get the fax through. We got it into the commissioner's office with less than a minute to spare.

Thank goodness that fax went through ...
"He looked like a surfer kid from SoCal," manager Dusty Baker says. "He didn't say much, but you could tell he was cool."

Still amazes me how many Reds fans were simply flabbergasted by that deal. I was 100% in favor of it from the start. Hate to lose a prospect like Stewart but it has to be done from time to time if you want to contend. I actually liked Roenicke a lot.....Encarnacion couldn't leave fast enough.

The First Law of Bakermetrics: Speed trumps everything - including the speed with which certain players exit the roster. Nice catch.

Few others have captured Bakermetrics like you. I am proud to say I know you.

I was one of those flabbergasted by the trade for the simple reason that trading top prospects for what at the time was an injury prone, 35 year old 3B that averaged .750OPS and 105 games per year was not a good use of resources especially when you consider guys generally tend to decline as they get older.

Now I did say that if we were making the trade for the 2002 Scott Rolen I would be all for it. Little did I realize we were getting the 2002 Scott Rolen. Hopefully he stays healthy and keeps hitting.

    That's funny.

I heard a similar story this week about an NBA trade regarding an All-Star/Rookie-of-the-Year.
