Re: Friday, July 9th Minor League updates

Clayton Shunick had, I believe, the first impressive outing of his career. He was working on a no-hitter through five and finished: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Billings won 10-2. Jonathan Kaskow had three hits to raise his average to .354.

Quite a night for the organization's starting pitchers.

In a 2-0 loss in the first game (I think) of a doubleheader, the VSL Reds' starter, Franderlin Romero (19), had this line: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.

In an 8-0 victory in the second game, the starter was Jean Lopez: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K.

Ismael Guillon's great start was noted earlier. He was followed in the ASL Reds' 1-0 victory by Canadian lefty Mitchell Clarke: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. For the season (five appearances), Clarke's now fanned 14 in 9 innings, with 3 BB.

After getting off to a horrible start in June (.411 OPS in 37 atbats), Juan Duran is hitting .296/.424/.481 - .905 OPS in 37 atbats in July.
    I miss Adam Dunn.

Duran starting to "get it." One of the things I most wanted to see down on the farm when the year started.

Volquez was not as impressive as his line would indicate. He's still having control problems. Many pitches were up. He hit 97 on the gun. He may have gone higher but I didn't notice.

3 walks is kind of high...but those numbers look awfully good to me even with that. I say 1 more start in AAA and he should be ready to pitch for the Reds.

Anything truly concerning? 97 sounds good. How was his change-up? He seemed to be getting a lot of swings and misses, especially towards the end of his outing. Considering his history I'm not overly concerned about some control problems. As long as his stuff looks good enough to be effective then get him up after his next start.
"He looked like a surfer kid from SoCal," manager Dusty Baker says. "He didn't say much, but you could tell he was cool."

    Pitches-strikes: Volquez 102-61

That's a little concerning. Not terrible at all, but not good. And his misses were often high.

Aside from missing a lot with his change, it seemed pretty good.

    That's just typical for Volquez.

Even at his best he's always been a little wild/high pitch-count pitcher. He should be in the rotation after the break. I'd like to see a 6 man rotation of:

    Arroyo
    Cueto
    Leake
    Wood
    Volquez
    Maloney/Bailey

Keep everyone's innings down- Leake and Wood because they're young, Bailey and Volquez because of their health issues, and Arroyo and Cueto so they can be fresh for the playoffs.
    Go BLUE!!!
