    Reds stats through 90 games

Reds go 4-6 on tough road trip before All-Star Break ending with gut-wrenching 4-game sweep by Phillies. Team is now 49-41. Reds lead the Central by 1 game, was a 1.5 lead last time. 437 runs for, 392 runs against. Reds now 27-19 at home, 22-22 on road.

Hanigan back for Hernandez, on DL. Wood (near perfect game) and Maloney in rotation with Harang and Bailey now both on DL. Volquez expected back after break. Rolen, Phillips, Rhodes and Votto (final fan vote winner) to ASG.

Offense - Team OPS dropped from .785 to .779, still first in league. Team SLG (.441) and BA (.272) still lead NL, OBP dropped to third in the NL at .338. All these stats a bit lower. Reds still lead league in hits and runs, now 2nd in homers.

Gomes and Votto with 60 RBI at ASB, Rolen with 57. Phillips with tough series in Phil, now has BA of .294. Votto OPS at ASB is 1.011 to lead NL. Also leads in OBP, SLG, and tied for league lead (with Dunn) at 22 homers. Votto 6th in NL in BA. OCabrera with .612 OPS, Stubbs at .709.

Pitching - Team ERA has improved over 20 games from 4.53 to 4.19, now 11th best in the NL. Starters ERA is now 4.09, ninth in NL, was 4.32 last time. Pen ERA improved slightly from 4.51 to 4.48, 12th in NL.

Arroyo, Cueto and Leake combined 23-7 at the ASB with ERAs of 4.04 for Arroyo, 3.53 for Leake, and 3.42 for Cueto. Cordero with 24 saves in 30 chances, 4.20 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 34 Ks and 22 BBs in 40.2 innings.

Nice to see these numbers, KC. Cincinnati is on pace for 800 runs or thereabouts.

    Pretty solid, that.

The pitching is improving as well (though April will probably keep any of the talking heads from noticing), especially the starters.

With Volquez coming, it should drop even more. Assuming both that extra starter and Bailey return and pitch in the pen, those numbers should improve as well.

According to ESPN, the Reds have the easiest schedule in the second half of the season. That should also see a bump in numbers.

Hopefully, the Reds stay relatively injury-free and those that are dinged up (Hernandez, Rolen, Cabrera, Hanigan, among others) use the break.

From the saber perspective, here are the WAR figures. Pay most attention to the last 3 columns -- that's where the totals are. The data is from fangraphs. No, this isn't absolute gospel. But I do think it paints a pretty good picture of our strengths and weaknesses in the first half. Infield = Excellent. Outfield = Mediocre. Starters = Decent. Bullpen = Poor.

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
