The only hits for the Reds were a leadoff double by George Foster in the fourth inning, a two-out double by Dave Collins in the fifth, and a two-out single by Junior Kennedy in the eighth. Reds starter Joe Price left the game in the top of the eighth inning with an injured ring finger on his left (throwing) hand after Giants 2B Joe Strain lined a single off Price's hand.

    Rockies manager Buddy Bell was ejected in the bottom of the eighth inning by first base umpire and crew chief Dana DeMuth for arguing that Elmer Dessens should be ejected or the Reds should at least be given a warning after Larry Walker was hit by a pitch. In the top of the ninth inning Rockies reliever Jose Jimenez was ejected for hitting Eddie Taubensee with a pitch in retaliation. This was the first game after the All-Star Break. During the break, the Reds traded LHP Denny Neagle and minor-league OF Mike Frank to the Yankees for four minor-leaguers--LHP Ed Yarnall, RHP Brian Reith, 3B Drew Henson, and OF Jackson Melian.
