    In Game 1, Pirates 3B Don Hoak was ejected by home plate umpire Ed Sudol in the bottom of the second inning for arguing a called third strike. Gene Baker replaced Hoak at 3B for the Bucs. In the top of the fifth, Sudol ejected Reds SS Roy McMillan for arguing an out call at the plate as McMillan attempted to score the second run on a double squeeze by Bob Purkey. Willie Jones replaced McMillan, playing 3B, and Eddie Kasko moved to SS.

    In Game 2, Tom Cheney pitched a four-hit shutout to get the win for the Pirates. The only hits for the Reds were a two-out single by Gus Bell in the first inning, a one-out single by Vada Pinson in the sixth, a two-out single by Ed Bailey in the seventh, and a one-out double by Bell in the ninth. Reds starter Don Newcombe was ejected by home plate umpire Dusty Boggess before he ever threw a pitch. While Newcombe was warming up in the bottom of the first inning, the Pirates complained to Boggess that Newcombe's sleeves were not the same length. Newcombe went to the dugout to change shirts, but on the way he got into an argument with Boggess and was ejected.
