Sunday July 18, 2010 Minor League Updates

The Mudcats play the Lookouts in the second game of the series today at 2 o'clock. It will be interesting to see if Daryl Thompson can get beyond a handful of innings. Last time out the guy gets sick and leaves the game because of the heat. Would love to stay in the house and watch Wood pitch today on the tube but there is too much sun out to stay here.
We're planninig to be at the park for the first pitch today.

    Thompson's 0-4 with a 3.54 ERA.

IF Carlos Mendez has been reassigned to the Mudcats from High-A Lynchburg. Mendez overtakes the roster spot of Eric Eymann, who was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a sprained right thumb.

The Mudcats' roster is at the Southern League limit of 24 players.

Dayton Dragons will try to bounce back from their big loss against Burlington last night. Jake Johnson will go against Keaton Hayenga. Hayenga has been god-awful so far this year (14.0H/9; 4.5BB/9; 4.0K/9; 0.88K/BB), so Dayton's odds are looking pretty good.

    Sean Danielson walked.
    Jose Castro was HBP.
Daryl Thompson fielder's choice--runners on the corners with two outs.
Kris Negron singled, scoring Danielson and moving Thompson to second.
Felix Perez singled to load the bases.
Sean Henry doubled in two runs.
Mike Costanzo was HBP to load the bases.

Daryl Thompson left after 3.1 innings. Lee Tabor is in now. I haven't yet heard why Thompson left the game.

So is Kris Negron actually a prospect? I was under the impression when we traded Gonzalez for him last year that he was just organizational filler?

He isn't a real good prospect, but he has some legit speed and should stay at SS. So he has some value and is more than a true organizational guy like Eric Eymann is. Perhaps a bench guy as an infielder/pinch runner one day.

The Reds like him a lot. He can stick at SS, has good speed and patience at the plate, and his intangibles are out of sight. He's more of a 25th man type of talent, but the same has been said about a lot of guys who turned out to be more.

    edit:
    ^ Yeah, what dougdirt said.

I'm betting Perez is sharing time in LF with Heisey or CF with Stubbs next.
He's my position darkhorse to make the team coming out of ST though.

    Could be:

    LF Heisey/Dickerson
    CF Stubbs/Perez
    RF Bruce
