Gaiman's my favorite living writer, fwiw.
I read it today at work. Thought it was pretty good. Couldn't help but feel sorry for the kid the whole book.

I'm about 500 pages into the uncut version of The Stand. God this book really drags on at some spots.

Started reading "S" by J.J. Abrams. Interesting format. Was a little frustrating at first, you have to kinda figure out how to read it.

I read the original version. I loved it, but I could definitely see where there would be huge lulls going deep into characters I didn't care about so much. Or maybe I just didn't care about them cuz there was no depth.

"young adult book" someone passed along to my wife. Started out, OK, could have had more detail, but the further I got in the book the more I enjoyed. Just kept getting better and better; loved the ending. Could have been a little more detail/development, but in the end I think it worked well as is.
I just finished "I Am the Messenger" and loved it. It's one of my favorites of the past few years. Can't wait to read "The Book Thief" now, as well as Zusak's first three books.

Re: What are you reading now?

Since my last post in this thread I've finished:

Tim Cowlishaw "Drunk on Sports" and it was pretty good.

Motley Crue "The Dirt" and it was good to but I wonder how embellished it was.

Greg Allman "My Cross to Bear" was extremely good if you're into that genre of tunes.

"Conversations with Hunter S Thompson" the Literary Conversation Series is a must read for anyone who like HST.

Orwell's "1984" is my latest finish and I truly enjoyed it.

Currently working on Mark Musa's translation and notes of "The Divine Comedy Vol. I: The Inferno". Very cool so far (Set to begin Canto VI). It's been on my shelf for YEARS and I've just now picked it up for one reason or another.

Scarcity: why having too little means so much
This book is about the cycle of "tunneling" and "focusing" that people get into when they experience scarcity, which is defined as too little of something you need in order to be comfortable and/or to manage your own resources effectively. The research is starting to show that intense preoccupation with the short term (think busy college student juggling work and school, single parent trying to make ends meet) actually reduces a person's ability to make sound, longer term decisions. Really, IQ actually drops by about 12 points when the mind is clogged with worries about making rent this month, which in turn reduces ones executive decision capacity. (This is somewhat similar to Kahneman's book Thinking Fast and Slow) In other words, it's a new way to explain why people who feel overwhelmed by being busy can never seem to get out from under their pile of work, or why people continue to take payday loans, despite even knowing in the abstract that they are making terrible financial decisions.

In part, this explains why people who are in poverty face overwhelming odds. The traditional explanations of low intellect, lack of motivation, etc., are in an ironic way, being born out, except that scientists are beginning to better understand the hard wiring aspects of the behaviors which from the outside looking in seem so easy to change. A very interesting read.

Putting The Stand on hold for a while. King's over writing on this gets old. At least in my opinion.

A little over 100 pages into Gone Girl. I'm really loving it so far.

And now you know why the publishers and editor made him yank something like 400 pages originally!

Re: What are you reading now?

I just listened to an interview with Doug Dorst, the guy who co-wrote 'S' with J.J. Abrams, and this is going to the front of my queue.

I just finished Gone Girl. I really loved with with the alternating chapters of the husband/wife. The ending I just don't know if I liked it or not.

I thought the ending was appropriate. I can't say I felt good about it, but it was appropriate.

Just bought me a book of Game of Thrones. Have heard good reviews so thought of giving it a try.
