Does Phillips need to be rested more?

He's started 98 of the 100 games. He looks worn out to me.

    Pre All-Star: 820 OPS
    Post All-Star: 567 OPS

Anomaly 30 points higher OPS in the 2nd half

I like to see the whole 25 man roster used, and Baker really marginalizes some guys, I think.

Here's a case where I think it would help the team to get Janish more starts at 2B so BP is fresh in crunch time.

I just believe he is an ultra streak player. When he presses at the plate the front shoulder flies out and trouble starts.

I don't see fatigue as much as I see pressure.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

To what do you attribute his 1st half/2nd half splits? Randomness?

Yes I would. I've heard often that Brandon and Votto are the two best competitors on this team. I think he gets into funks when he presses and tries hitting a 3 run homer with nobody on base.

His mechanics get out of whack and stay that way for a week.

So, at the very least, they should recognize when his mechanics are out of whack and, rather than let it linger for a week, sit him down, right? Might right the ship somehow.

To me, the splits are too large to ignore and can only to point to a general wearing down. I think he'd do better with 145-150 starts than with 155+.

I don't suspect much is done honestly. I've seen multiple times this year where players take terrible approaches to at bats and they continue throughout a series.

I generally think the Reds consider the hitting coaches job to be in the cage and not in the dugout.

Pretty much. Granted, Phillips might be tired. So is just about everyone else on an MLB roster this time of year. It's a brutal schedule.

Also, why write off 2007 as an anomaly?
How do we know he's not Mel Torme?

lollipop, in this pervasive heat, with the dog days approaching, I agree with you that he sure could use a bit more rest.

Yet most posters (I'm not saying you) freak everytime a regular gets a day off.

    Sundays specials, etc., etc.

I'll say it again, when managers rest some regulars it's because they believe that in the long run they will win more games.
