    Sunday 08/01/2010 Minor League Updates

    Welcome to August...

The Carolina/Jax series will wrap up Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 first pitch as Tom Cochran (7-5, 2.64) goes for Carolina while former major leaguer, Andrew Miller (1-5, 5.18) makes the start for the Suns.

Honestly, the Mudcats need this one to maintain some hope of winning the second half crown in the Northern Division. The team is now four back and under .500. On paper, Cochran is as good as it gets for todays start against a guy that has only two more Ks than BBs issued at AA. Miller's stock has really tanked in the last 18 months.

We're holding tickets for this one and the heat has subsided in the area. Possibility of rain exists but the sun is trying to break out now so we'll see which way it goes this afternoon.

    Update on Yorman Rodriguez:

The Mustangs played the game without Yorman Rodriguez, their leading RBI man.

Rodriguez batted in the first inning in Friday night’s game, but did not continue after complaining of soreness at the base of his left hand. X-rays of Rodriguez’s hamate bone were negative and an MRI was scheduled for today.

Yikes, that is not good news on Yorman. Hopefully it is nothing serious.

    Thanks for the update.

Mudcats won 8-5. Mudcats starter Tom Cochran accumulated a big pitch count and left after only 3 innings, giving up four runs.

Two games in a row that Valaika is out. I have not heard what happened. What injury did he sustain?

Re: Sunday 08/01/2010 Minor League Updates

Clearly, the man today was Ruben Medina. Cochran was not on top of his game. The HP umpire was killing Cochran as I was seated low and agree with Cochran on the inconsistency in calls. The one thing Cochran is always good for, body language. I knew he was very unhappy with the HP ump. I was still a tad surprised when Cochran did not answer the fourth. Matt Klinker and Matt Fairel were charting pitches behind the plate so I eased over and inquired about Cochran. Too many pitches in too few innings was the response. I did take advanatage of the situation to tell Klinker that he did a really good job a month back in Durham against the Bulls on his short notice promotion to AAA. I know he's a short timer here but he's one of my favorites.

Medina is the guy that the Mudcats can look to today and be thankful. He was perfect, period. Look at his line. He hit 96 on a couple of pitches. Rock solid outing.

Andrew Miller has to be a huge concern for Florida. I knew that as long as he was in the game the Mudcats had a chance and he didn't let me down. Early and often the guys were hitting him like it was BP. I have to wonder if he is headed out the door soon. I saw him do a rehab start here a couple years ago as a Mudcat when the team was with the Marlins.

After the game the Mudcats Booster Club was doing a pig picking for the team on the main concourse. The Abbott Trailways was patiently waiting to take the guys to Huntsville, Alabama for the next series. Good to get a win today. The guys played well.

Louisville is scoreless through 4. Alonso keeps raking, 1-1 with a walk. Up to .285 on the season (in Louisville).

Billy Hamilton has been very, very good this season. As raw as he is, I thought he would struggle in the Pioneer League but he's actually having a great season. He's come a long way in the last year. 4-for-6 today with a double and he also stole his 19th base. He's now hitting .325 with an OPS around .830 in 160 atbats.

Also, another productive day from Juan Duran as he went 2-for-5 with two doubles and a walk. Duran since July 1: .300/.370/.456 - .826 OPS.

    Tyler Cline: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Is Billy still switch-hitting? If so, his season has been even more impressive...

    Absolutely dead serious question.

If Alonso keeps raking and the OF continues to struggle, do you dare?

Dickerson is 2-3 tonight with a walk. He needs to be up here now.

Very nice. I am optimistic about both of them.
