Pretty darn close to his requirement (the Giants could have pulled to within .5 a game) back in '90 when San Fran came to town for a 4 game series 10 Aug 1990.

Re: Biggest series in a long time

It's a big series, but no one needs to be too emotionally invested in the outcome of this one. Whatever happens, there are still nearly 45 games left to play after this. I fully expect the Cardinals to win two of three and I'm OK with that.

If the Reds were to sweep the series somehow, being 5 games ahead would obviously be a pretty big deal. But in any other scenario, the race will still be extremely close either way.

For those of you outside the FOX Sports Ohio viewing area, the game is on ESPN tonight (8/9).

    Yea what he said.

I think barring a Reds sweep (up 5 in division) this series will be exciting, fun to watch, but in reality just another 3 games during the season. Even if the Reds get swept the would be 1 game behind the Cards. If the Reds do sweep, going up 5 would be a huge swing and would put the Reds in the drivers seat.

The new pressing question on the minds of Reds fans everywhere: Will Jim Edmonds Reds gear be available in time for this series?

I've hated the man for years -- he's singlehandedly ruined more nights for me than Jose Cuervo and the girls of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority combined -- and I want to own a piece of history to commemorate the moment I was forced to cheer for Jimmy.

I'm interested in not only the games (obviously), but Redszone's reaction to the games. Brutus nailed it: anything but a Red sweep is really no big deal. And even a Reds sweep may not mean all that much.

Agreed up until the end. A sweep would be pretty large.

It's large only in the sense that it adds additional margin of error on the west coast swing.

biggest opportunity in a long time, not sure about being the biggest series. They are all big at this point and will get bigger.

It has been fun for my 3 boys who are getting their first taste of a pennant race. They watch the Reds, then are tracking the Cards online. Momma gets a bit upset about their "addiction," but they are having a blast.

I expected a loss tonight, so I'm really not all that upset. The Reds never hit Carpenter. The only way to beat him is to hold the Cardinals to a run or less.

We need Cueto to step up tomorrow night.

I expected the loss too, but for some reason I'm pretty upset. I guess I was just mad that every Cardinal dink was finding a hole, while the Reds were ripping it all over the yard and finding gloves. Frustrating game.
