    Chipper Jones out for season

Didn't see this posted anywhere but according to MLBtraderumors.com Chipper Jones is done for the year with a torn ACL. Not good at all I know they still play the cards 3-4 times I know this has to have some kind of negative consequence for the Braves. Might it cause them to slide in the East and in the wild card hunt? He might not be what he once was but he still had his moments. Hope he recovers and returns we know his numbers are real.

Could be the end of the line for Chipper, he's 38 and he'll turn 39 at the beginning of next season. Great player and definite Hall of Famer IMO, always felt like he didn't get the attention he deserved and was underrated. Hopefully he comes back and can put up a couple more decent seasons.

I'd be surprised if he comes back in any fashion other than a bench guy.

One of the greatest switch hitters in the history of baseball. True Gamer.

    Career stats

    Is this HoF worthy?

Remember the guy could field his position and when it comes down to it he's quite possibly the best 3B of his era, only Scott Rolen can claim to be as good overall. Remember were not talking about a first baseman or a dh here, not as many 3b put up numbers like that.

Here are Chippers scores on the Hall of Fame statistics at Baseball Reference, the disparity between them is rather interesting.

    Black Ink Batting - 4 (415), Average HOFer ≈ 27
    Gray Ink Batting - 109 (196), Average HOFer ≈ 144
    Hall of Fame Monitor Batting - 164 (68), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
    Hall of Fame Standards Batting - 66 (19), Average HOFer ≈ 50

Black Ink gives you points for leading the league in the major batting categories. More points are given for more flashy, important statistics, like homers rather than triples for instance. Gray Ink is similar but you get credit for being in the top 10 rather than just leading the league.

The final two are more complex but suffice to say you get points for milestones and awards you've won throughout your career. For a more detailed explanation see this link at BR. Many here have probably seen these metrics and might know more about them but its always good to give some context and explanation.

Also for the fun of it here are Chippers similar batters...

    1. Jeff Bagwell (884)
    2. Larry Walker (846)
    3. Duke Snider (844) *
    4. Billy Williams (825) *
    5. Eddie Mathews (823) *
    6. Jim Rice (816) *
    7. Vladimir Guerrero (815)
    8. Dwight Evans (814)
    9. Bernie Williams (809)
    10. Mickey Mantle (807) *

Five Hall of Famers and three guys who range from ok shot to sure thing, not a bad list at all.

Depends if you think he was clean or not...and I'm not saying by any means that he isn't, it's just that, fair or not, every player that played in that era will be scrutinized in the same fashion.

That'll be the end of his career. It is hard to watch the greats you grew up with go out.

Is a HOF in my view. Watched a lot of braves games during his time there as most ppl did. Injuries really take a lot from his overall numbers. Was one of the best switch hitters of all time

They will? Chipper hasn't been that sharp this season and the Braves have the best record in the NL, or very close to it.

    Chipper's rankings on the team:

    AVG: 7th (.265)
    RBI: 4th (46)
    HR: 5th (10)
    Total Bases: 5th (135)
    Fielding Pct: 32nd (.952)
    Errors: T-1st (10)

This certainly doesn't help the Braves but I doubt it is a serious blow to their playoff chances. He's hardly the player he was in his prime.

What a shame if this the way Chipper has to go out.

He's been one of the most consistent players in baseball ever since his first year, not too many guys can say that.

He's a sure HOFer, and was a joy to watch.

It is a shame, but it is still better than losing your playing time and falling asleep in the dugout.
