Valaika and LeCure called up Smith sent down Edmonds to DL

I know a lot of people are talking about his on-base percentage (.308 in 2008), but I like to think more in terms of him his in-scoring position percentage. - Our Beloved Manager

I really don't understand why LeCure has passed Maloney on the organizational depth chart.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Re: Valaika and LeCure called up

Here's the gist of his report regarding this news:

The Louisville Bats have announced that right-hander Sam LeCure and infielder Chris Valaika were called up by the Reds.

Makes sense: LeCure can go long if Travis Wood has a short outing tonight, and the Reds were going with six outfielders. So if Valaika takes Jim Edmonds spot that gets things in line.

This will be Valaikas first time in the big leagues. He was hitting .304/.330/.408 with four home runs and 53 RBI at Louisville. LeCure was 8-3 with a 3.67 ERA at Louisville.
I guess they want to keep Maloney in starting mode and not use him as reliever? I guess that makes sense. At any rate I'm happy to see Valaika get his shot at the big leagues although he probably would have been up as a September call up anyway. He just gets there a week or so early.

It may be as much as wanting some protection in case of a failed starter again.

They may want to keep Maloney in his regular rotation because he is valued more highly.

I think it's just timing and bullpen protection if Wood gets knocked out early or if the game goes several extra innings. LeCure's on four days' rest while Maloney is only on two days' rest. If the Reds need a guy to pitch four or five inings again tonight for whatever reason to preserve the bullpen, LeCure's able to do so.

He came up as a shortstop, but it's always been assumed that he'd become a second baseman due to his size. He dropped some weight in an effort to stay agile enough for SS, but ultimately, it wasn't enough to keep him there. He may not be much as a shortstop (although he's often been sold short imo), but he was recently selected by Baseball America as the best defensive second baseman in the International League.

Only thing I can figure is they don't mind burning up LeCure's options and losing him to waivers; they want to hang onto Maloney.

'option year' is a more appropriate term than 'option'. If a player is optioned in 2009, he can be sent down and brought up as many times as a team wants and have it count as only one 'option'. Maloney's and LeCure's options have nothing to do with this.

I think that is the answer on why Sam. I am looking forward to seeing Valaika but wonder if ditching Sutton to get Edmonds and Nix on the roster was really worth it now that we are looking for infielders.

The Reds already used this year's option on LeCure and Maloney.

I'm sorry, but I have lost track.
