Jon Morosi article on Chapman and the Reds

I posted this in the Chapman thread but it probablt deserves a thread of its own. This is a nice read from Morosi.

Aroldis Chapman has arrived. Suddenly, itís cool to be a Reds fan. Thanks to the 22-year-old Cuban defector, the biggest bandwagon in baseball is actually a riverboat.

ďIíve never faced a lefty thatís throwing 103,Ē Brewers infielder Craig Counsell said. ďI donít think any of us have, really. Heís doing something weíve never seen.Ē

MLB Tonight compares the sliders of Aroldis Chapman and Randy Johnson. Quote from Dan Plesac (paraphrasing), "Chapman's slider is as good as any left-handed slider I've seen, including Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton..."

I take exception to this line from the Morosi article:

"Suddenly, it’s cool to be a Reds fan."

No. It has always been cool to be a Reds fan.

I like the line about going up there and looking for the slider.

On MLB Tonight, Barry Larkin just listed Aroldis Chapman as the best 23-and-under pitcher in all of baseball.

No kidding. I just want to see the Reds keep winning so the brunt of the hype is on the club and not on our 22 yo rookie.
"He looked like a surfer kid from SoCal," manager Dusty Baker says. "He didn't say much, but you could tell he was cool."

They once tried to name a street after him, but failed due to the fact nobody would dare cross Aroldis Chapman.

    I've seen that list:

    1) Jim Coombs
    2) "Well you know, this is a family place"
    3) Beer
    4) Pizza
    5) Chapman

    Aroldis Chapmanís Fantastic Pitch f/x

This is a world-class ability to combine excellent vertical drops and outstanding lateral pitch control with average velocity on fourseam fastballs of 102 mph cut fastballs and sliders at 89 mph.
