Does anyone know the general history behind Dusty's enmity with LaRussa?
Does anyone know the general history behind Dusty's enmity with LaRussa?
I think it started in the 2002 NLCS when Baker was managing the Giants. In 2002 with the Cubs, there was a beanball game where Baker and La Russa were yelling at each other from the dugouts. Baker was quoted afterwards, "Nobody intimidates me but my dad and Bob Gibson and a bully I had in elementary school."
Believe it or not, Baker played for La Russa in Oakland.
This is the best explanation and history I have seen yet:

Despite it all, La Russa maintains that the relationship between him and Baker is a friendly one, and he goes back to 1986, when Baker was finishing his career with the Oakland A's and La Russa spent the second half of the season with the A's as manager after being fired as Chicago White Sox manager in June of that year.

Rivals in the Bay area before Dusty ever thought of managing the Cubs, friendly though, but once they were in the same league there was some tension, because Tony likes it that way.
Thank you, gentlemen. And Always Red, thanks for the link, in particular. It's not the first time a thorough answer has been supplied by Rick Hummel (long-time beat writer for the Post-Dispatch, and a very good guy).
