What in the world tells you that Dorn is a LH Gomes?

The Reds view him as that, and considering how the Reds build their roster they put a ton of stock into their bench players being good defenders some where.

Its not what I think its what I think they think.

Sapp is a righty, right? Could it be with Alonso and Francisco off the bench, they want a righty?

    More from Fay:

Wladimir Balentien would probably have been the guy. But he went of the disabled list at Louisville.

Dave Sappelt, who started the year at Single-A and has risen to Triple-A, is under consideration. Hes hitting .319 after 19 games at Triple-A. Danny Dorn is another possibility. Dorn is hitting .307/.404/.554 at Louisville.

I would think Dorn has the better chance. He has more experience and he is a left-handed hitter

I just don't get why they wouldn't call up Dorn (who is eligible) when Sapp isn't until 2012 at the earliest (not sure when) it would just be wasting a spot. Sure, Sapp could break camp next year for the Reds, but if he does they can deal with putting him on then.

Plus its not like Dorn unless he flips out and mashes would be claimed if they needed the 40 man spot.

Anyone is eligible for the 40-man, but I think you're referring to Rule 5 eligibility. There's no rush to put Dorn on, though. He can be put on the roster when the protected lists are due in November. If the Reds intend to do that, perhaps they believe they'll have additional roster flexibility to do so (not retaining Gomes, Edmonds retiring, etc.)

I don't know what the Reds think of Dorn. I'm not sure what other clubs think of Dorn. Heck, I myself don't know what to make of him. I tend to think of him in the similar Redszone overhyping that has been the case for guys like Denorfia, Dickerson, etc. I will say Dorn's offense has seemingly jumped to another level this year, though, so perhaps he's a legitimate bat. But regardless, other teams have to think highly of him enough to keep him on an active roster all season in 2011 to draft him in the Rule 5 this offseason (if he's not added to the roster before then). Is there any evidence of that being the case? I haven't seen any, but who knows.

Agree. Once he's on, he'll tie up a spot and I don't see the Reds doing it. I wouldn't be surprised if they went outside the organization for a journeyman that they can cut loose after the season.

Re: Sappelt Might get Called Up

Unfortunately for Dorn, he's not as good as fit as Sappelt for what the Reds actually need right now, which is a guy who could play any of the three outfield spots in a pinch. But I also don't think they want to add Sappelt to the 40-man before he's ready to stick in Cincinnati. So the "sign a vet for a week" scenario is probably what will happen.

Well, ya, I meant Rule V.
