Padres can't score in a brothel with a fistful of fifties.

I'm looking forward to this weekend of baseball. I'm going to watch our Reds at 7:00 while keeping an eye on the Braves/Phillies series then I'm going to watch the Giants/Padres after the Reds game ends. Hopefully the Padres can win game one and keep their hopes alive for another day.

If the Reds and Padres both sweep, I believe it doesn't matter what the Phillies do. The Reds would inch into the 2-spot and host those first two games.

The Phillies winning against Atlanta is just a fail safe to avoid Philadelphia, potentially.

This doesn't deserve a thread of its own so I'll just post it in here. This is hilarious - Erick Aybar swings at a pitch that narrowly missed hitting him a bad spot:

    4-0 Padres over the Giants.

We're going to be on the road, but we can avoid the Phillies if the Padres (or Giants) win the Wild Card.

A win tonight would bring the Padres within a game of the Braves.

Hopes for avoiding the Phillies are not completely dead yet. Padres are up 4-0 on the Giants in the 3rd and the Phillies are up 11-5 on the Braves in the bottom of the 9th.

What we'd need, then, is a SD sweep and the Braves to get swept, or even win only one of three. Is that right?

If the Padres sweep and Braves get swept, Padres win the Wild Card.
If the Padres sweep and the Braves lose 2 of 3, there would be a playoff.
Same goes for if the Braves get swept and the Padres win 2 of 3.

An interesting thing could happen if the Padres sweep and the Braves lose 2 of 3. The Padres/Braves/Giants would all be tied.

Yeah, I asked about that on another thread earlier today. All 3 clubs could end 91-71. Apparently there would first be a playoff for the West crown, then one for the WC.

    Re: September Scoreboard Watching

Might as well just focus on the Phillies, and maybe even pull for it at this point. The travel schedule alone would be brutal if the Reds have to go back and forth to Frisco or San Diego twice in one week. It might be unsatisfying to some to get bounced without winning at least one playoff series. But, if you are REALLY talking about going as deep as possible the Reds are probably going to have to play the Phils at some point. Best to have them in a short series, as has been noted by many, than the NLCS.

Actually if the Padres sweep and the Braves get swept the Padres would win the division and the Giants would be the wildcard.

    Re: September Scoreboard Watching

One thing is for certain. The Reds stand to gain absolutely nothing by winning a single additional regular season ballgame this year. It really doesn't matter who Dusty rolls out there the next two days.
