    Photo of Sparky

An old photo of "The Main Spark" that I had never seen, with the old Toronto Maple Leafs baseball club.

Found the photo at Uni-Watch site.

Apparently- he was 36 in 1970 when took the Reds job, and looked like he was 56!

Great pic of Sparky there; I have looked in vain over the years for an action shot of him during the one year he played for the Phillies. I've seen the baseball card photos from the Phillies years, but no game action photos.

Have you tried the Baseball HOF Library?? I have heard they have a huge collection of photos.

Good idea; the library is not accessible on line- looks like I need to go to Cooperstown!

What's the inside scoop on how they chose him as manager. I would have to think it was controversial at the time. (I'm sure WOY has a link somewhere)

I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.

I work with a guy who is in his mid-30s, have known him for almost 10 years, and he has had white hair since I've known him. I once asked him about it and he said it use to be blonde but has always been really fair, and by the time he was in his mid-20's was rapidly turning white.
