Jose Rijo, Tim Layana, and Rosario Rodriguez combined on a three-hitter in a losing effort for the Reds. The only hits for the Dodgers were back-to-back singles by Jim Niedlinger and Lenny Harris with two outs in the fourth inning, and a single by Mike Sharperson with nobody out in the sixth. Prior to the game, the Reds claimed C Alex Treviņo off waivers from the Mets. The Reds felt they needed some catching insurance for the stretch run, as regular catcher Joe Oliver was nursing a minor injury, leaving Jeff Reed to be backed up by untested rookie Glenn Sutko.

    Record: 78-59, 5.5-game lead in the NL West.

    I always liked Rocky Bridges. Funny and had lots of good quotes for the writers. But, man, giving up Joe Adcock to get him. Not a good trade...one of my least favorites of the 50's.
