Ranking by Position Group: Starting Pitchers

You probably won't want to go 44-deep, like I did. And it's not at all necessary, since the objective here is to establish some reference points for the Top 40 that will be upcoming. So list as many or few as you choose. I just thought that it wouldn't hurt to get all (or at least, most) of the names out there, so you can make your own judgments.

The ages are according to the current listings (for 2010) on baseballreference.com

Nice list. i wouldn't quibble too much, but I don't think I'd have Thompson in the top 10. If he has any place in the organization after this season I'd say it's in relief. I'd say he's pitching for someone else next season.

I Like Lotzkar a lot, but I'd like to see a full healthy season from him too. Klinker didn't have the best of seasons, but I'd still have him in the top 10. I'd have Mugarian, Robles and probably Carroll higher too, but I don't see many differences.

Who is Jacob Johnson? never heard or seen much about him.

Also going to have to echo doug and ask why you have box in the 20s? He was more than solid this year when he started and has tools.

Johnson was 19 this season and pitched all year in Dayton. He has solid stuff. 11th rounder last year out of HS.

Are there any reports stuff wise from this year or perhaps scouting reports from when he came out of highschool?

    87-90 (touches 91), tons of grounders, slider/curve/change.

Just not a big Boxberger fan. I know I'm in the minority there, but he strikes me as one of those guys who doesn't capitalize on his stuff, for whatever reason. Even when he was starting this year and doing OK, I wasn't as impressed as most seemed to be.

I, too, would prefer to see Thompson in the bullpen; but the fact is, he's not there. As for his ranking, I still have a hard time getting past the fact that, in his first big-league start at the age of 22, he threw five shutout innings in Yankee Stadium. We know he can do it. The question, as we also know, is whether he can get/stay healthy.

Its so hard to rank any pitcher who isnt at least in double A IMO. These guys are pitching in such short sample sizes against unproven talent in the lower minors. Its hard to know what you really have until then.

bubba -- My rationale on Johnson was that the Reds clearly dubbed him this year as the top of the class that includes Tuttle and Tyler Cline. He was the one who was skipped ahead to Dayton. He remained in the rotation all year, and while he didn't distinguish himself, he was competitive. The Reds seem to love his coachability, intelligence and makeup. He also has a nice, big frame.

(As for not having heard of him . . . It could be because, in initial reports, he was listed as Harold Johnson. But he apparently goes by Jacob.)
