This pic of Ernie and pics of Yogi were all I knew about being a catcher in baseball - before becoming a fan. I knew about Opening Day, where Crosley Field was, Smokey Alston (he lived in Darrtown), Sandy Koufax, and I could identify Pete Rose if he was walking down the street towards me - but that was it.

So my thoughts on catching was that the manager or owner lined up the team and picked the homiest player to be the catcher since he could be hidden behind the mask. Then I saw an ad for a car dealership in the Enquirer with two men in suits - one was Pete and the other was some guy named Johnny Bench and under his name was "Catcher". WHAT?!! He was nice looking... I wonder what the pitchers looked like (I assumed that they were the best looking)... I looked upon the 70s as the decade of handsome catchers...

OK who is on deck? I can't off the top of my head remember any number 3's. The only number two I can remember is Gary Redus and I doubt he played in any playoffs with the Reds.

meh. That may be the "official" rule on it, but the regular season isn't 163 games

#3 John McNamara was the manager of the 1979 NL West Champions. But I'm having a hard time finding any pictures of him.
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

Good point. 163 games is hardly 'regular'.
