Baseball America's Carolina League Top 20 (Mesoraco #5)

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...0/2610745.html

    Here is the Top 5:
    1. Julio Teheran, rhp, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Braves)
    2. Eric Hosmer, 1b, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Royals)
    3. John Lamb, lhp, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Royals)
    4. Wil Myers, c, Wilmington Blue Rocks (Royals)
    5. Devin Mesoraco, c, Lynchburg Hillcats (Reds)

Not really much surprise there. No other Red made the list.

Boy, the Royals seem to be solid in AA. Give them a couple more years, and they should be fun to watch.

CF Jarrod Dyson/ David Lough/ David DeJesus
    2B Johnny Giavotella
    LF Billy Butler
    3B Mike Moustakas
    1B Eric Hosmer
    DH Kila Ka'aihue/ Clint Robinson
    RF Alex Gordon
    C Wil Myers
    SS Jeff Bianchi

    SP Zach Grienke
    SP Aaron Crow
    SP Danny Duffy
    SP Tim Melville
    SP Mike Montgomery

    Closer Joakim Soria
    RP Tim Collins
    RP Louis Coleman
    RP Greg Holland
    RP Patrick Keating
    RP Henry Bererra

That's five guys total who've spent more than a couple months in the majors, all of them young (aside from DeJesus). I realize prospects don't all pan out, but these guys look really talented. (I'm assuming Butler can play LF, as he certainly passes the look test, though he has struggled anywhere but 1B. It's the only way to keep all those 1B/DH prospects on the team.)

No Reds listed in MWL, only 1 Red listed in Carolina League. There are definitely holes in this system right now.

Yes there are, but they are at the A/A+ level and the rookie levels look strong, so those gaps could easily fill themselves over the next year and a half by the time those crops reach AA/AAA. Dayton had several prospects that probably make the back end of the Top 20 in most years (LaMarre and Gregorius for sure, Henry Rodriguez perhaps). This year the league just happened to be absolutely stacked.

Lynchburg had some guys there too with Mesoraco, Sappelt (very limited time there), Puckett and Soto on the offensive side of things. On the mound they had some arms worth noting as well with Joseph, Boxberger and Horst (very limited time there). The team wasn't missing prospects, it just didn't have multiple upper echelon guys.

Is Mes sitting only at 5 because those guys are that much better prospects then him or is it due to him only spending a partial season in the league?

Those guys might all be better prospects than him. All 4 of them are likely Top 25 prospects in all of baseball. It isn't a slight on Mesoraco at all. But the key thing to note here is that this list is based more on the scouts in the league and managers opinions, so limited time in the league could have led to some guys not seeing him and thus not voting for him. Still, I don't think its a bad thing for him to be where he is, it says that he is an absolutely elite prospect.

Did Joseph get on any "top prospect" lists?

Not yet. Very tough for relievers to make these lists when they don't project as lights out closers. Joseph looks more like an 8th inning guy.

I could be wrong, but I think it's more because Baseball America had sort of written him off before the start of this season and they don't want to look bad.

You are wrong, in this instance at least. The league Top 20's are based on voting by the Managers and scouts within the league. That is why you will see guys ranked ahead of guys in the Top 100 that they ranked behind in the League rankings. They are two entirely separate things done by different people.

Level gap doesn't mean as much as age gap... Yes, the Reds are thin at certain levels, but it's because there are guys playing at high levels effectively that should be playing in those mid-levels based off of age, but were promoted due to talent...
