He's been off for 5 weeks, you only play about half the days in AFL, and he'll be off 3 more months after fall league. Plus he's young !!

Nats have decided that Bryce Harper is going to play AFL. He'll be a taxi squad guy playing twice a week. Going there in 13 days. I hope I get to see him

The Saguarros got stomped 9-1 and are 0-2 on the year.

    Sappelt went 0-1
    Negron went 1-2

Horst went 2 IP with 2 H and 2 ER and 1 HR allowed.

Devin's had about a month's rest since the end of the season (and the ankle injury). Give him a few weeks to hone things, then he'll have about three months to rest up for ST.

Edit: Sorry Jax. Replied before I saw yours.

Not such a good night last night.

Negron went 1 for 5 with a BB, Mesoraco 0 for 3. Sappelt did go 2 for 3 with 2 BB but in Typical Red's tradition was caught stealing twice.

Its been pretty uneventful the last couple of days. Valiquette had a poor outing on Friday while James Avery was a highlight on Saturday with 3 IP, 2H, and 2K, Avery is a sleeper for a 40 man roster spot. The Reds must think highly of him to send him to Arizona. A good stint in the AFL and he's on IMO.

    D. Thompson has made an appearance now in the AFL. A lot of pitchers struggling so far down there giving up runs, will be interesting to see how some of our guys do.

I go entirely the other way on Avery. The Reds (and probably most teams) don't want to send starters to AFL because they've already logged their share of innings.

The other pitchers this year are Valiquette and Horst who were relievers, and Darryl Thompson who only logged 60 innings because he was hurt.

Last year it was Leake (hadn't played since June), Boxberger, Ondrusek, Watson. For 2008 the roster says Manuel, Watson, Viola.

In Avery they can send a starter who only has 100 innings on his arm this year. In AA he put up a 5.63 ERA, more hits than innings pitched, half as many strikeouts as innings pitched, and a .321 avg against him.

I think Avery is a warm body and has no chance of being added to the 40.

I was thinking the same but I don't see why they waste an AFL Spot. He could go to the Mexican League to get work in. I'd have saved that spot for Joseph. I get that nobody wants to send starters. but these goes usually go no more than three innings and relievers would be ok. I think its for guys being considered and non-prospects go south of the border.

Actually, Ondrusek is the model I'm thinking of. Those others were lit up in AZ. Watson was horrid. Viola was ho hum. Even Ondrusek was iffy and didn't make the roster until turning it around the next season. If Avery is bad, he won't be on. If he's good, I think he could be. A lot depends on who else we see the Reds deal, extend, keep or non-tender. I think there could be lots of spots or maybe not enough.

Avery has a heavy fastball with solid velocity. If he can find another quality pitch, which sometimes can come on very quickly, he could be a legit bullpen arm.

Maybe they had no one else they wanted to send. Perhaps the Reds were content with everyone's innings and felt like they had an "open" spot on the AFL roster to send Avery who pitched about half a season.

    Re: AFL Starts tonight

Just noticed that former Reds Minor Leaguer, catcher Jason Bour, is on the AFL roster. I knew he had been released by the Reds but didn't realize he signed with the White Sox. Interesting...

Yeah, when Bour went to the White Sox, he really lit up the Carolina League. His performance tailed while in Birmingham, but maybe the White Sox discovered something.

Generally, other than in the case of guys that didn't log their innings because of injury, I think the Reds are sending guys they're not comfortable with, to try and do some final evaluations. I think they're not sold on Avery, which is why they might want to see more of him.
