Yeah, I had to figure this was going to happen. Some new blood is badly needed.
Benzinger hasn't really shown much with the talent he's had. Of course, I'm not sure Connie Mack, John MacGraw, and Freddie Hutchinson could have done anything with the talent he's had the past two years in Dayton.
If you saw any Dragons games this past year, then you know how horrible the fundamentals were. I'm talking about silly mistakes in the field and on the base paths. Throwing to the wrong base, missing cutoffs, just allaround Little League play. Stuff like that goes back on the coaches.
“It was disappointing that they weren’t dying to have me back,” Benzinger said, “but I was never begging to do this...It’s not that tough a pill to swallow. I was somebody they needed in a pinch and now they’re going to find someone else. My goal in life was never to be a 20-year minor-league manager.”
Uh, thanks for playing, Todd.
But there is someone who will always love you.

Interesting comments by Todd, not the greatest break up but one what was probably needed. Benzinger was a great guy, but not a great coach. Will be interesting to see who is brought in with all the talent that will be at Dayton next year.
In 2+ seasons as a Red, Benzinger had -3.2 WAR, and a lot of that somehow came from his defense. His intangibles must've been off the charts because it's amazing that he was given as much opportunity as he was.
The thing about this years team is no one on the team had any OBP ability which was a staple in Benzinger's resume as a player. His Career OBP over 9 years was .301. Something that was apparent in the way his team seemed to approach their AB's.
The Dragons are a low-A squad that play in front of 8,000+ every night.
There are rumblings in Dayton that the conspiracy theorists are saying the Reds are choosing to send bad baseball to Dayton knowing they are getting full houses.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.
Wonder if the Reds will go for the home run and have somebody "famous" like Griffey Sr as the manager. Also Dayton should be LOADED with talent, may not produce a great record but should be a great team to watch.
Wasn't Griffey their hitting coach last season?
The team went an entire month w/o winning at home. I don't care how bad your talent is, if you go an entire month with out winning a home game, there is something wrong with the approach that is being taken. I think they need to clear house and considerring the talent scheduled to pass thru there the next couple of seasons, get some great coaches in there that can improve upon the talent the Dragons will be seeing.
