Rangers' WS Appearance Moves Reds Into Top 10 Longest WS Droughts

I guess the thread title says it all. The Reds now have one of the ten longest World Series droughts. As someone who grew up as a baseball fan in the 1970s, it is shocking to see the teams that make up the list:

Of the 20 World Series appearances that were made during the decade of the 70s, 15 of them were made by the Reds (4), Dodgers (3), A's (3), Orioles (3), and Pirates (2). All five of those franchise are in this top ten list. A sixth team, the Royals, were in the ALCS for three straight seasons from 1976-78.

The Dodgers made two more World Series appearances in the 80s, while the A's made three. It's strange growing up with these teams as fixtures in the World Series and now seeing them go decades without playing in one.

As far as the Reds are concerned, I won't be dwelling on this fact. The 90s were competitive overall and the 00s were a disaster. Thats all in the past though.

I'm not as concerned with this drought as much as I was concerned about the 15 year playoff drought that we had endured until this year. 15 years! That's a long time to never make the playoffs. Also the streak of losing seasons. That was bad, too.

Well, we ended one drought this year, hopefully next year we can end another.

I agree. The 15-year playoff drought was worse and much less excusable, especially given that eight teams, or almost 1/3 of the league, make it each year.

Most of the dominant teams of the 70's are represented on that list. Baltimore,Pittsburgh,Kansas City,Cincinnati,Los Angeles and Oakland were regular playoff teams during that decade. For the most part nearly all turned into dregs of the league in the 90's and 2000's. The Dodgers are the real surprise here. You wouldn't think a franchise with the financial resources they have had during this time would have gone so long without at least one World Series appearance.
