I was skeptical of Soto completing the switch, so I didn't include him. I hadn't heard that he's converting during Instructional League. I'll say this: he has the speed of a catcher. That man runs like a plumber (and I don't even know what that means). But if he does switch, he would definitely warrant a high ranking. Of course, that would depend, also, on his receiving and throwing.
I do like Vidal's bat. He's one to watch, as well. Good call.
Not sure I would displace Barnhart, though. I like him a lot.
Barnhart had a great year at Billings. He's willing to take a walk and can hit. But he has little power, as of yet. Too, his scouting report out of high school tells us of a pretty advanced defensive catcher.
Soto was able to catch 10 games at Lynchburg, but had a greater year two years ago at Billings. He also has plus-plus power. But he's allergic to walks and probably will never be as good behind the plate as Barnhart.
I'd say it's really a case of po-tay-to/po-tah-to on this one. Maybe Soto gets extra credit because of his advanced level and young age. Maybe you ding him too for his lack of tools (speed, plate discipline, pure glove).
For those wiser than me in scouting and minor leagues, does Mes project to be a middle of the order bat? Could he one day be protecting Votto in the lineup?
He has the power to be a 30 HR guy, so I would say yes. He has a few things to work on still at the plate, but his power plays well. As for protecting Votto, I still expect that to be Jay Bruce's job even with Dusty wanting to split up the lefties despite the fact that neither Bruce nor Votto struggled to hit lefties last season (or longer in Votto's case).

The only reason I asked if he could protect Votto is because of Dusty's affinity to split up lefties and righties. I would hope/think that Bruce steps up into the role of #4 hitter next season, but doubt Dusty will fill out the card that way. For Dusty it would be a dream if Mes could be a #4 hitter because he can split up the lefties.
