Unless we offer arbitration, we get nothing. I don't see it happening.

They would need to be offered arbitration first in order to get compensation. There's almost no doubt that Harang would accept the offer, and it's probable that Cabrera would, too. The least Harang could earn would be $10M, and the least Cabrera could earn would be $2.8M, and seeing as how they already paid a $1M buyout, it would essentially mean they paid him at least $3.8M for 2011.

I thought this was the case just wanted to run it by someone more informed about the rules than I.

Harang and Cabrera would not have this floor applicable to them in arbitration.

The 80% rule does not apply to players that are free agents. It only applies to players under reserve (i.e. renewals or arbitration eligible prior to the 6 years of service).

    From the CBA:

    D. Maximum Salary Reduction

    (1) A Club may not tender, sign or renew a Player under reserve
to the Club pursuant to Article XX(A)
    of this Agreement and paragraph
10(a) of the Uniform Player’s Contract to a Uniform Player’s
Contract that provides a salary for Major League service that constitutes
a reduction in excess of 20% of his previous year’s salary or
in excess of 30% of his salary two years previous. A Club may not
tender, sign or renew a Player under reserve to the Club pursuant to
Article XX(A) of this Agreement and paragraph 10(a) of the Uniform
Player’s Contract to a Uniform Player’s Contract that provides
a salary for Minor League service that constitutes a reduction in
excess of 40% of his previous year’s salary. For the purposes of this
section, the “salary” of a Player with a salary stipulated in paragraph
2 of his Major League contract of less than the then applicable
Major League minimum salary shall be deemed to be the greater of
either (a) the total amount of his actual baseball salary earnings
from Major League Clubs (and from Minor League clubs if any) in
that season or (b) the amount stipulated in paragraph 2 of his Major
    League contract for that season.
So Harang and Cabrera would not be under the maximum salary cut protection.

For additional context XX(A) describes players that are under club control, and it's clear that once they become free agents, they no longer apply.

Thanks, Brutus. I forgot about that.
