    Amateur Signing Bonuses

Mlbtraderumors has an interesting piece on amateur signing bonuses, totaling the five largest bonuses each club has given.

The Reds, perhaps not surprisingly, are third having given Aroldis Chapman a $16.25M signing bonus (albeit spread out until 2020). Only the Rays and the Diamondbacks have paid more.

    The Reds were at $25.82M

I haven't made the numbers match, but I'm guessing that's Chapman, Grandal, Bailey, Leake and Rodriguez, although that doesn't add up.

I think they should only count Grandal once.

My mistake, it should have been Yorman Rodgriguez, not Grandal a second time.

I see now by clicking on the Reds, they show the bonuses.

    Chapman $16.25
    Chris Gruler $2.5
    Y Rodriguez $2.5
    Bailey $2.3
    Leake $2.27

They list Grandal as being at $2M along with Alonso, Stubbs and Duran. But Cot's shows Grandal got $2.99. I'll have to research that. That Gruler pick really hurts.

It's similar to the situation with Yonder Alonso. Alonso received a $2M signing bonus, and he's due to earn more than twice that over the rest of his contract. Grandal also received a $2M signing bonus, but the rest of his 'bonus' is being spread out over the next few years.

But Chapman's bonus is also spread out over quite a number of years (thru 2020) and they've calculated the entire amount in their figures. I made a comment on the post to see if he agrees. There doesn't seem to be any mention of Grandal's bonus not all being in one fell swoop.

That's true, but Chapman's situation is a little different. They calculated only bonuses and omitted salaries. Chapman is getting yearly bonuses, where as Alonso and Grandal are limited to only yearly salaries from here on out.

Perhaps you're right. Cots doesn't specify what Grandal's salary is at present.
