He was once ranked the #86 prospect by BA but was playing indy ball in the Atlantic League this past season.

I always liked the guy and never understood why he didn't get more of a chance. Solid organizational depth type.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

Always liked his look. Long dreads and high, old fashioned socks.

Oh yeah, he could get one base and has nice speed too. The Reds could have used him late last year with all the injuries.

I recall that Brain Barton either had training to be an astronaut or aspired to be one. Anyone remember? MattyMo?

Good pick up. This is more along the line of what I believe Walt will do as opposed to putting out a lot of money for top tier guys.

But Barton, who had the surgery in Miami while finishing up his degree, is perhaps even more eccentric than even we at Baseball America knew. The 25-year-old outfielder apparently traveled all season with a pet turtle (name unavailable).
    edit:
Instead of using the quote that answers your question, I opted for the funnier quote.

Like this move for the organization. He may help out the big league team at some point in a Darnell McDonald sort of a way. Can't ask for much more from a minor league FA. Hope he rebounds from a poor 2010. Wish he was a lefty.

Very nice signing. We need to have guys like this in the system to provide depth.

He dominated the Atlantic League last year -- almost won the Triple Crown. Reds probably had some competition on Barton.

Anybody know if he got an invite to major league spring training?

    I think that's pretty much a given.

Lugged it around in a box all the time. Called it "Barton in a Carton." No truth at all to the rumor that he once tried to use it for a cup with tragic results.

Very nice pickup Walt. I remember Barton from his time on the Cards but never knew much about him. He showed some great OBP skills in the minors, and didnt have to bad of numbers in his mlb stint.

Strikes me as kind of a right-handed Chris Dickerson.

That makes sense. What about a poor man's Michael Taylor?

My first thought was confusing Michael Taylor with Reggie Taylor, yikes.

Anyone know why he fell out of the MLB so quick?
