    Jeremy Hermida close to signing

    From Mark Sheldon: http://marksheldon.mlblogs.com/archi...g_hermida.html

    Reds close to signing Hermida
The Reds appear to be close to signing outfielder Jeremy Hermida to a Minor League contract, a baseball source told MLB.com on Monday evening.

The deal has not been finalized and the club has made no formal announcement.

Cincinnati has been looking for a left-handed hitting outfielder to come off of the bench and Hermida could fit that bill if he were to make the club out of Spring Training. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has also had talks with left-handed hitting outfielders Scott Podsednik and Fred Lewis.

A former first round Draft pick of the Marlins in 2002, Hermida spent 2005-09 with Florida as the primary right fielder. Last season was split between the Red Sox and A's and he batted .216 with six home runs and 29 RBIs.

    ------------

I like it. Not a bad depth move and maybe he can potentially live up to a first round pick. No harm here.

Eh, it's not a bad deal. First of all, it's a minor league deal, so no need for panic. Hermida was also actually decent prior to 2010 in Florida's big ball park. He's been an underachiever given his physical abilities and draft position, but he's not a terrible pick up at all on a minor league deal.

I agree it's a can't lose situation really. Guy is only 26, little to no risk.

How so? This is a minor league contract with a chance to compete for a platoon job in ST. Lewis would likely want a major league deal. This is MUCH lower risk with MUCH higher reward.

No problem here, they could still sign Lewis as well.

I don't know that this means he is done with LF, yet.

What is everyone's deal about SS? Am I the only one that thinks Janish is capable?
What if this is as good as it gets?

The Reds make the playoffs and sign Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Hermida and possibly Fred Lewis to minor league contracts.

The Phillies make the playoffs and sign Cliff Lee.

Tampa made the playoffs - lost Carl Crawford and may be trading away Matt Garza. This game is fun.

    Next?

Why would the Reds not be interested in Garza? Is Tampa asking a king's ransom for him?

And I don't think that the signing by the Phils was a smart one, sure looks good on paper but i don't think it addressed issues that they had.

2 of the biggest needs that Walt has been talking about is SS and a lead-off hitting LF. Thats where your choices of Fred Lewis and Scotty Pods come in. And instead we sign Jeremy Hermida. So much for wanting a lead-off hitting LF. Ya Hermida is only 26, but in my eyes he is another Johnny Gomes, he just plays better defense.
