    Hot Stove League show report

Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show for 1-4-11. Marty and Thom were the hosts and Marty began the show by talking about the HOF announcement on Wednesday and the possibility of Barry Larkin being voted in. Marty thought that Barry won't make it this year and he believed Robby Alomar and Bert Blyleven will be the ones chosen. Marty also said that Jeremy Hermida has signed a minor league deal with the Reds with an invite to ST. Marty also said that the Reds Caravan will take place form January 27-30. Marty and Thom said they thought the Hermida signing was a good one. Thom said he's in his mid-20s and has done some good things in the past but it's been a while since he's played regularly. Marty agreed and said he's 26 and has proven he can do some damage in the big leagues. Marty said it will be interesting to see what the Reds will do to get a backup SS and a LH hitting OFer who can lead off now that they have some extra money from not re-signing Rhodes. Thom said they have addressed the LH hitting OFer with Hermida but he's not going to lead off even though he's not guaranteed a spot. Thom said the Reds could also bring in Podsednik or Fred Lewis to compete for that job. Thom added that he feels that Renteria isn't ready to be a backup player yet. and that could cause trouble. Marty disagreed and said that if they bring him in here it's with the understanding that he's going to be a backup to Janish unless something happens to him.

The first caller gave a shoutout to our own redsfan1966 and Mrs. redsfan1966 (both of whom I've had the pleasure of meeting on a couple of occasions) for renewing their wedding vows in Vegas. He asked Marty if he thought the Reds would miss OCab's leadership. Thom said he doesn't think they will miss his leadership but they will miss him as a guy. He said this team reminds him of those Reds teams from the late 80s who finished 2nd 3-4 years an a row and had veteran leadership like Dave Parker and Buddy Bell but then it became Barry Larkin's and Eric Davis' team and it's time for the young players on this team to lead it. (Couldn't agree more. For better or for worse, these "young" players have had a lot of mentoring over the past few years and I don't necessarily think they need some veteran to hang around just to mentor them.) He said this team should belong to Bruce, Votto and Stubbs.

The next caller asked about the strength training the Reds do and who pumps the most iron. Thom said he doesn't think there are a lot of guys who are heavy lifters. He knows Gomes works out a lot with weights but baseball players usually aren't built to lift a lot of weight and they are more about flexibility and stamina with a lot of reps at a lighter weight. Marty said he thought Nix was a big lifter but most of the current Reds are not.

After commercial, the next caller said he had been watching some DVDs of the 75 World Series and they had local announcers like Marty (for the Reds) and Dick Stockton and Ned Martin (for the Sox) do some play by play for some games along with the national announcers. He wondered what Marty thought about the experience and if they would ever do that sort of thing again (Anything that would mean less Tim McCarver is O.K. in my book.) Marty said that he likes to think that will happen again. He said after that year they eliminated the local guys on TV for the Series and he thought it was a big mistake. He said it was nice though and he enjoyed his experience.

The next caller asked if anyone can fill Rhodesí shoes. Thom said that probably solidifies Chapman in the bullpen and said that Chapman has even said he may need another year in the bullpen. He thought Rhodes did a great job here but if someone had to replace Rhodes, Chapman's a good choice.

The next caller said that he wanted to respond to a caller from last week who called Votto a clown for not jumping at the chance to sign a LTD here. Marty said he didn't recall anyone saying that. The caller said that guy was probably a Cubs or Cardinals fan because Votto is the best pure hitter the Reds have had and plays almost as hard as Rose.

The next caller said he was the guy who called the week before about Votto and he, Thom and Marty bantered about trying to get Marty a pay raise. Then he said Votto is so arrogant and persnickety (Persnickety? My grandma doesn't even use that word.) He couldn't believe there hasn't been a backlash in Cincinnati against "that idiot.Ē Thom asked him if Kevin Youkilis said he didn't want to sign a long term contract with BOS because he wanted to play for the Reds if that make him a clown. The caller said no and Thom asked him why Votto canít make a grown up decision about where he wants to play. The caller said that Votto commented on another player who got a 10 year deal (Which player was this?) and said that he couldnít imagine making a 10 year commitment. Thom asked him if he isn't allowed to feel like that. The caller said he did but Votto didn't have to say that in public and throw it in the fans' faces. Thom agreed.

After commercial, the next caller asked how important is ST this year compared to last year. Marty said it's all about mindset. This year they are the hunted, not the hunter. He said they will be picked to win the division by a lot of experts and it has to be incumbent on them to know everyone is gunning for them. The caller asked if any jobs were up for grabs like SS. Marty said from everything he has hears Janish is the starter at SS unless something unusual occurs.

The next caller asked who the Reds leadoff hitter would be. He said he knows Stubbs is fast but could Janish be the leadoff hitter. Thom said he's open minded to try anyone. He doesn't think Stubbs or Phillips is a leadoff hitter. He said that the best leadoff hitter in terms of getting on base is Hanigan. He said he isn't going to disqualify Janish because he doesn't think anyone else is qualified.

The next caller asked when the Reds caravan will be in Columbus. Marty said it would be on Sunday, January 30.

After commercial the next caller asked who they thought is following Bronson as the #1 starter. He thinks after Bronson it's Cueto, Wood, Volquez, and either Bailey, Leake or Maloney. Thom agreed but he switched the order around with Volquez, Cueto and Wood in the 2, 3 and 4 spots. Thom said this is all predicated on Chapman pitching out of the bullpen. Marty agreed.

The next caller said he thinks Stubbs could be a good leadoff hitter if he cut down on the strikeouts and bunted more. (Thank you, Captain Obvious.) Marty said Joe Morgan plans on working with him to make him have better contact at the plate. Marty said if Stubbs is the leadoff hitter it's by default because there's no one else. He said he could be an impact player if he hits lower in the order.

The next caller asked what they thought of the facilities in Goodyear and if they are excited to come back and he thinks losing Rhodes was a big loss because if Bray gets hurt (and he probably will) they will be shorthanded from the left side. Thom said people need to remember that Chapman will probably be in the bullpen and Willis may be able to contribute and then there's Phillip Valliquette who was the best LF reliever in AA and AAA last year and a top prospect. Marty thinks they will take a long look at him in ST. Thom said the facilities in AZ were top notch. Marty agreed.

The next caller asked if SS is Janish's job to lose. Marty said that it is his job to lose. He said if anyone deserves to be in that position it's Janish. He really admired the way he handled to OCab situation last year. He said there isn't a player in the club that has more class or carries himself like a big leaguer than Janish. He said no one has greater respect for Janish than he and Thom.

After commercial, the next caller asked if they are going to continue platooning Hanigan and Razor Ramon. Marty said there's no reason why they shouldn't and said other than Brian McCann as a duo they out performed every catching duo in 2010. The caller asked if they are going to keep Corky. Marty said he won't make the club. (Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! What do the Reds have against catchers with sweet porn staches? In protest I will grow one of my own until the Reds come to their senses.)

The next caller said Jay is a little young for people to say he's not going to be a good ballplayer and that he may be worth the money the Reds are paying him. Thom and Marty got all indignant and said no one said he's not a good ballplayer. The caller said that another caller said that Bruce wasn't worth all the money he was getting paid. Marty and Thom said no one on the show said that. (To clear things up, the guy who doesn't like Votto was jabbering with Marty and Thom about how Marty should get a tenth of what Bruce is getting and how Marty was worth more than any of the players.) Marty and Thom evidently don't realize that and dismissed the caller.

The next caller wasn't sure he was on and Marty yelled at him, "Talk to us, you're on the radio! Hurry up!" (How I love HSL Marty when he gets all cranky with the callers.) The caller basically said how much he and "Mother" loves Marty and Joe - and, to a lesser extent, Thom.

The next caller gave a shoutout to one of his friends and Marty yelled at him to just get to it. The caller asked what Stubbs would run the 40 in. Thom thinks less than 4.3 seconds. He thinks he would be as fast as any football player. Marty said it stands to reason he's the fastest player in the NL. Thom agreed and said he's the fastest player in the NL and the fastest RH hitter in MLB.

The next caller asked Marty how he was doing. Marty yelled at him to make it quick cause they are running out of time and they are fine. The caller thinks that Votto's nickname should be Joey "The Bat". (What is this, an episode of The Sopranos?) Thom thinks that's a great idea and half-jokingly says Marty should call him that on the radio. Marty agreed that it sounds like he's in the Mafia and thinks that he might throw it out there.

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-4-10. So let it be written. So let it be done.

Anyone that calls Cincinnati a baseball town should listen to the Hot Stove League and banana phone calls. Painful stuff. Do other cities have the same representation of their fans on the radio?

I listened to the STL equivalent about 3 weeks ago. STL must have better call screening because their callers were more interested in how the team will do next season than gladhanding the hosts. This sounds more like a small town radio trading post show.

Kudos for the transcription effort, Chip. Much more entertaining than actually listening to the show.

What if this wasn't a rhetorical question?

Great work as always, Chip. And...I got some news out of that. Like it or not, Marty and Thom set a lot of the tone for this fanbase perceives players, and it sounds like Marty is going to be on the mic in the spring pushing Janish as the starter. I wonder if that is Marty's view alone or if something he has picked up from Walt.

That whole "listening to the other person talk" skill has vanished from WLW. To the folks on that show, the only reason other people talk is so that you can catch your breath before you make your next point.

    Oh, and thanks Chip.
