It is now being reported that Congresswoman Giffords has been eating soup and singing "American Pie." I am amazed by her recovery, although I realize she surely has a long way to go.

What's the future of her responsibilities as a Congresswoman? Will she be able to re-assume her duties eventually or is there an effort to replace her before the 2012 elections?
Edit: I suppose a third option would be for her to continue her absence during the remainder of her term and not seek reelection.
All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.
I haven't read of any efforts to have her replaced before the 2012 elections and I would think responsible politicians in both parties would be hesitant to even raise that issue right now. Her story is so remarkable and inspiring that I think anyone doing so might reap severe criticism.
My guess is that if she has not sufficiently recovered to resume her duties by the end of the year then she may face a primary challenge within her own party. I wouldn't think her absence right now is having any great efffect upon what legislation is passed. Probably the greatest effect might be in geting anything through that primarily concerns her own district.

While not known how well she will recover, there have been few calls for her to step down at present (mainly from very conservative bloggers). There is even talk, again if she recovers sufficiently, that she may run for the Senate next year to replace John Kyl who is retiring.
