MLB Network Special Top 50 Prospects tonight

The MLB Network will have a special on the 2011 top 50 prospects in the minor leagues. It will air tonight from 9 PM to 10 PM eastern Standard time. It will re air at midnight tonight to 1 AM. It will also be airing a couple other times. I just wanted to pass this information on especially for those who have the MLB network.

My major pet peeve with this list, and it has been since I found out a few years ago how it was compiled: Jonathan Mayo asks scouts for their Top 30 prospects and they get 1-30 points each. If every scout had the same #31 prospect, he wouldn't get a single vote. But if one scout ranks a guy #14 and no one else would have had him in their Top 50, he is considered a much better prospect by doing the list this way. Just not a fan of doing a Top 50 when you only ask people to rank 30 guys.

Chapman comes in at #6...behind Dustin Ackley. Uh, no. I would take Chapman over Ackley without thinking twice.

Scouts just drool over Ackley. Holding your own in the upper minors during your first year as a pro is impressive, but isn't he just a lesser Dustin Pedroia? That's nothing to dismiss, but above the guy who best profiles as the next Randy Johnson?
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

There are only two prospects in all of baseball who I would even consider trading Chapman straight up for: Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, and even then I highly doubt I would make the trade.

Trout, no. Harper, without thinking twice about it. Harper is going to be a very special kind of player.

The guy who throws 105 but has questions about a third pitch and control? Absolutely. Top it off that one guy throws a baseball for a living, while the other doesn't and its simple. Bryce Harper has one of the best swings I have ever seen. His talent at this age can be matched by very few in the history of the game (I am talking Arod/Griffey type of ability). Chapman has a tool that no one else in the history of the game (that we know of at least) can match, but his talent at this point is IMO.

I think Ackley's ranking goes beyond his first year performance in the pros.

For the record, he tore up the AFL: .424/.581/.758.
