I have a cousin who lives about 20 miles south of me that has been nice enough to allow me to stay at his place WED and THUR nights. I get up at 5:00 am, shower and then drive back home to let the dog outside. The dog tried to hide in the bedrooms when he came inside b/c he does not want to be alone in the basement again (Jack Russell, needs attention). I emptied the freezer this morning and threw that stuff away at a convenience store trash can on the way to work.

I am contemplating filing in small claims court against Dayton Power & Light. You are not prepared to take care of your customers (or something like that). Does not cost much to file and I do not expect to win. Pain and suffering (cousin's couch is not comfy to lay on all night!), wasted food, mental trauma to the dog, a full length mirror that cracked due tot he cold (has that spider-web look now), etc, etc. It might get me my 15-minutes of attention from the media. Type of thing that could lead to my own reality show or an appearance on Oprah. Whatcha think?!?
When the wind storm came through a few years ago, I was without power for 7 full days. Do you know what it took to restore it? One guy with a long extending stick to reset the transformer from the ground. Took him 3 minutes. Waited 7 full days for that to happen. There are about 100 houses on my street. 4 of us had no power, so we weren't a priority. Thanksfully I have a generator and was able to keep the fridge and freezer going as well as a light.

Your homeowners/apartment insurance usually will reimburse you for lost food. That'd be your easiest remedy

Most of the time the deductible will make it very much not worthwhile to file a claim. During the windstorm we lost $200 worth of food, but since our deductible was $500 there was no point filing a claim.
