    Sorting out the 'Pen

How in the heck are all of these arms going to be used this season?

We know for sure Cordero, Massett, Chapman are all but locks for the back end. But how about the rest of it? I see it as possibly this...

    In:
    Arrendono
    Willis
    Burton
    Ondrusek
    Massett
    Chapman
    Cordero

    Odd men out:
    Maloney
    Bray
    Leake
    Harrera
    Smith
    Gil
    LeCure
    Fischer

Eventually most if not all of these arms will see the big leagues this year, but this is my prediction before any Spring games are played. What are your thoughts?

I'd agree with everything except I'm guessing Bray will get a spot over Burton. Lefties hit something like .106 on him last year.

    Bray is a lock.

I would agree with Bray instead of Burton, but everything else I think is spot on.

The Reds pen is pretty interesting and does not get much attention with everything else going on but they have very quietly upgraded the position significantly over last year.

1.) Chapman for the full season with major league experience under his belt.
2.) Arrendono appears to be back close to his pre-injury lights out form
3.) Willis is flat out devastating against lefties. Even during the seasons where he was dreadful lefties could not hit him. No reason to expect any different this year.

I honestly think the pen might be the strongest part of the team this year.

I honestly don't know about having 3 lefties in the bullpen though.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realize that Chapman is not even thought of as a lefty at this point. No one can really touch his stuff from either side of the plate, so having 2 lefty specialists might be the right way to go. On the other hand, Burton did just get extended and they say he is throwing it close to his old form. We shall see, but yes, this will be the strong point of this team in 2011 and beyond.

I know what's been said publicly by Walt makes it seem almost entirely impossible, but that's also his style of playing things very closely to the vest, but I still think a fairly major trade could be made for left or even short.

I could see Alonso, one of the relievers and Bailey/Leake being delt bringing the Reds a great 4 hole or legit leadoff hitter.

Willis will never make this team over Bray.

Willis will have to dominate AAA to get a sniff.

There. I fixed it for you.

It sure is nice to have these dilemma's with our starting and relief pitching. Too many arms. Who would have ever thought it.

I think Bray instead of Burton on your list. I believe it may come down to Willis or Leake because there aren't too many options for a long man from those on the list. Either of those could go more than a couple of innings if necessary.

Leake isn't going to come out of the pen. If he doesn't win the 5th spot they are going to send him to AAA to develop.

    Yeah, I agree.

Personally, I'd like to see Bailey dealt now for a prospect or two, with Willis in the rotation and Leake in Louisville. I think Dontrelle could return to form as a starter; I'm not so sure he will as a reliever.

Cordero, Masset, Ondrusek, Arredondo, Burton, Bray and Chapman could be the bullpen.
